July 26 is National Disability Independence Day, which commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990. The ADA has profoundly impacted the lives of many by breaking down barriers and ensuring access that was once out of reach. While we’ve made significant progress, our journey toward full disability inclusion continues. Recently, the Boulay team enjoyed a powerful presentation from Brittanie Hernandez-Wilson, Director of Equity and Justice at The Arc Minnesota who discussed ways to reframe our language to be more inclusive of the disability community. We’re grateful for the insights and resources she provided to support our continued growth!

"To be sure, some progress has been made, but the fight for disability rights is ongoing. Issues of disability rights in the past still leave an impact on the present." This #DisabilityPrideMonth, we honor the progress made by the early advocates, the changemakers who fought for disability rights to bring us the laws and policies we have today. Check out this informative history of disability rights by Allan I. Bergman, "Bending the Long Arc of Disability History," published in Impact: Disability Rights, Disability Justice from the University of Minnesota: https://bit.ly/4cGfJ0b

Today we celebrate National Disability Independence Day, which commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990. The ADA has had a profound impact, but we still have much work to do to continue building a culture that not only protects disability rights, but also celebrates disability pride. Here are three ways you can help to create a more accessible workspace: 1. Use captions in your virtual meetings, and when/where appropriate, save a recorded transcript for later distribution. 2. Provide agendas for meetings so those needing more time to process information to successfully share ideas have that space. 3. Include alt text on online images that describe what’s happening in the photo for those who may not be able to see.

Today is the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA protects people with disabilities from discrimination. The anniversary of the ADA falls during Disability Pride Month: a time to recognize the contributions and achievements of people with disabilities and advocate for a more inclusive world. 💙 We have come a long way with disability rights in the United States, but there's still more progress to be made. More than 1 in 4 adults in the United States have some type of disability, according to the CDC. Around 85% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed (via The Arc). This month – and every month – it's important to remember that not all disabilities are visible, and disability rights are civil rights. At Goodwill NNE, we are fierce advocates for people with disabilities. We help folks get work and integrate into their communities every day through our disability services. Today is National Disability Independence Day! In the United States, July 26 marks the annual recognition of National Disability Independence Day, commemorating the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law in 1990. Introduced in 1988, the ADA builds on the progress of the Rehabilitation Act. July is a time to celebrate Disability Pride. Did you know 1 in 4 Americans identifies as disabled? Mental health conditions can be both a disability and a result of living with a disability. Globally, people with disabilities make up 15% of the population, representing all ages, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. This month, we honor the identities, culture, and contributions of people with disabilities. Let's recognize that disability is a natural part of human diversity. While we've made progress, there is still more to do for true equality. Let's continue pushing for inclusion, accessibility, and support for all. #DisabilityPride #ADA #Inclusion #Accessibility #SupportForAll #MakeAnImpact

In July, we commemorate Disability Pride Month! Disability Pride Month was first recognized in 2015 by then-NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This annual observance promotes visibility and awareness of the positive pride felt by people with disabilities. The overall mission of Disability Pride Month is to help change the way people think about and define “disability,” to break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities, and to promote the belief that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can take pride.
