🚨 ACTION ALERT: Take Action for Tenants against Landlord Retaliation! 🚨 Call your elected official and share this message: Vote “YES” to concur in the Senate amendment to HB 4768 to protect tenants. Calls are especially needed in calls to members of the House, especially in IL suburban/collar counties. Find your rep here: https://bit.ly/3X1QSim Modeled after the Cook County tenant landlord ordinances, HB 4768 spells out the retaliatory actions that landlords may not take against tenants, including: giving notices of nonrenewal, raising rent, decreasing services, or filing an eviction action. It expands the protected tenant activities (that are currently limited to complaining to a government authority, including their legislators) to requesting repairs, seeking assistance from a community-based organization, or exercising any right provided by law. It ensures that people do not lose their housing because they requested their landlord meet their maintenance request. This legislation does not stop a landlord from raising the rent if they can show that it is not in retaliation but for another reason, this legislation ensures people’s housing is not put into jeopardy. #Illinois #landlordretaliation #housinglaw #advocacy #HousingIsAHumanRight #EndHomelessness

Every social issue has a history and deep roots. Once we focus on those we can arrive at solutions
"The New Sundown Towns," from Tracy Rosenthal for The New Republic: "I went to Grants Pass, Oregon, a town of 40,000 people that’s about to re-write homelessness policy for the entire United States. I found a perfect encapsulation of our national crisis. (And I wrote my longest feature so far.) The piece has four central characters: the town’s mayor who just survived a recall and three unhoused people just trying to survive outdoors. John Bapp went to high school with the police officer who now issues orders for him to move his tent every 72 hours. The town took a case to the Supreme Court because they want even more powers to police people who live outdoors. But the bigger story is about the national, bipartisan backlash against encampments and against the very policies proven to house people long term. As encampments go up across the country as a form of protest and face “time, place, & manner” restrictions on their constitutional rights, it’s a perfect time to reflect on unhoused people who live with that reality everyday." #JohnsonVGrantsPass #HousingNotHandcuffs https://loom.ly/8sm9gsg

As #NationalRoofingWeek draws to a close, let's remember why we do it. The roofing industry is an essential $100 billion sector with nearly 1 million employees. It is vital to addressing affordable housing shortages and building, repairing, and maintaining schools, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure nationwide. Let's continue to raise our collective voice and shape the future of our industry together! Mark your calendars for Roofing Day in D.C., April 8-9, 2025! 🌟 #RoofingDay #Advocacy #RoofingIndustry

Latest in my attempt to raise appropriate alarm about government plans to introduce a new mandatory ground for eviction 6A in the Renters Rights Bill. Mandatory possession must be given against tenants, where their landlord has been given a banning order and breached it, or where they have had a licence application refused or revoked. Forget about moral arguments for a second and just look simply at how this will impact upon tenants of landlords with large portfolios. 50 tenants spread across 10 HMOs who will all face immanent eviction and homelessness due to the council refusing a licence application perhaps simply because article 4 directions dont permit HMOs or a licence has been refused for some other issue not directly related to tenant safety but still 50 people will be evicted. Its mandatory, so judges in possession hearings wont be able to exercise any discretion in the granting of an order. If you are an enforcement officer, would this knowledge impede any decisions on possible action you make take? If you are a tenant, would this knowledge make you think twice before complaining to the local authority or providing a witness statement? Coming in next year.
