New Movie coming October 20th, 2023 Damage Boundary the Big Bang Theory This is the story of Damage Boundary and the folks that made it happen. Dr. Robert Newton of the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA proposed the first practical general-purpose method to determine the shock fragility for industry. This was an empirical testing-based method called Damage Boundary Theory and it was built upon the unique shock response characteristics of specific input waveforms. With a few simple tests, the shock fragility of a product could now be measured. Dr. James Goff, Frank Bresk, Bill Kipp, Dr. Robert Newton Stephen Pierce, Bill Armstrong, Edward Church, Doug McCall, Herbert Schueneman, Dennis Young EVENT DETAILS: Join us on Friday, October 20th at 5:00 p.m. at Michigan State University’s School of Packaging, as we pay tribute to these pioneers. In this Office of Naval Research supported work, we try to understand the unsteadiness and three-dimensionality of shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions over axisymmetric bodies. Such interactions exist in high-speed air vehicles, where curved surfaces are often encountered. Understanding this fundamental flow physics can help us improve the design and control of of these air vehicles.

Sometimes, your career plans might see some curveballs. But it's what you make of them that matter most in the end. For Capt. Dilon Duarte, learning that his eyesight prevented him from becoming a pilot did not discourage him from pursuing a career at the Space Force, where he now supports combat readiness. Turn your passion into a stellar career at www.spaceforce.com. https://lnkd.in/ekbARZr6

I usually keep the month of November to big celebrations and remembrances: the Marine Corps Birthday, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Native American Heritage Month. I do not typically celebrate or recognize some lesser included days. But, I do seem to remember that Carl von Clausewitz passed away on this day in 1831. For strategy students, especially at the National War College and the other senior service colleges, the early 19th-century Prussian general and military theorist is an essential figure to study. One quote that NWC introduces early to students still stands out with me. It is also more widely relatable than just for national security practitioners and members of the profession of arms. When describing “the strategist”, he said: “If the mind is to emerge unscathed from this relentless struggle with the unforeseen, two qualities are indispensable: first, an intellect that, even in the darkest hour, retains some glimmerings of the inner light which leads to truth; and second, the courage to follow this faint light wherever it may lead.” As a very capable faculty member (and, in my case also very patient) pointed out - Clausewitz was describing the unforeseeable future. Of course, compounding matters, the present is not fully knowable either. In my professional life, this above observation pairs well with an additional quote that is usually attributed to Niels Bohr nearly a century later. Bohr, the physicist credited with advancing knowledge of the atomic structure and quantum theory said, “Prediction is very difficult, especially if it's about the future.” Reminding myself of these timeless and timely observations by these towering theorists helps me to take my small piece of national security work in stride. Here’s to making a continuous effort to advance shared goals. And, if things still appear uncertain and full of “fog” and “friction,” it looks like today is also National Fast Food Day. #NWC #DOD #DTRA #USAR
