The Mining Industry: Two Sides of the Same Coin. When we use products made by the mining industry, we only see one side of the coin. But the other side involves the loss of vast amounts of land, soil contamination, pollution of groundwater and underground rivers, air pollution, and environmental disasters. At one time, storing and burying tailings seemed like a good solution, but time has shown that accidents and leaks can happen. Another aspect is the cost and complexity of maintaining tailings storage facilities. It brings no profit—these are pure expenses that do not guarantee the prevention of environmental disasters. We are creating ticking time bombs for ourselves and future generations. We have extracted and contaminated all this rock, and the only solution is to return it to its original state. This alone will solve the problem. What would you think if someone told you that it is possible to restore these tailings to their original state? I mean, to turn them back into rock—moreover, into an environmentally friendly rock that can be used in construction. Many will say that tailings contain too many metals that need to be extracted from the overall mass of the tailings. And these people would be right because natural resources should be used carefully and responsibly. When we extract ore from the ground, we must fully utilize all the material mined; only then will we avoid problems with tailings storage. Therefore, we need a zero-waste tailings processing technology with metal extraction. But for maximum impact, the technology must also be profitable. I know this all sounds unrealistic, and that's why it's time to introduce you to the "CRISTALL" technology. Since 2005, work has been underway to develop a zero-waste technology for processing tailings from beneficiation plants. The technology includes metal extraction, the production of construction materials, and the complete elimination of negative environmental impacts. By 2017, the "CRISTALL" company tested the technology by processing tailings from several lead-zinc beneficiation plants. Samples were produced (analogous to granite, diabase, basalt, jasper, and many other minerals), chemical analyses were conducted, and intellectual property was registered. The technology requires scaling and implementation at one of the mining and processing plants as the final stage of the beneficiation process. Mining and processing plants will be able to extract metal concentrate for further use, produce high-quality construction material, and create new jobs, making the beneficiation process zero-waste and highly profitable. Thus, the technology does not require constant investment, except for initial capital investment during the design, construction, and launch phases. The market value of the resulting material ensures a profitability level of at least 20%. Today, this is the most reasonable and sober path that we can and must take for the sake of future generations. #MiningIndustry

Or is it Labor’s union mates? If there is a viable rare earth mining opportunity funding or guarantors are abundantly available from anyone of the nation’s current rich listers. Why does this Government, indeed any Australian Government need to pledge funding????

Yet more of the West Coast is under threat from mining as the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has granted an Environmental Authorisation (EA), under the National Environmental Management Act 1998, to SRK Mining. The EA is for SRK Mining to conduct “non-invasive” alluvial and general diamond prospecting on the farm Karoetjies Kop (No. 150) over 2,960 square kilometres of terrain and the adjacent surf zone up to 31.5 metres below the low water mark. This follows a recent application just south of the Soutrivier to prospect for diamonds immediately adjacent to this area. Fish by the Sea (Pty) Ltd has applied for an EA to prospect (including invasive prospecting) for several years on the farms Rietfontein Extension (No. 151) and Graauw Duinen (No. 152) over 121 hectares of land and beach. There are several world-class surf spots in this beautiful, untouched area, which is also popular with campers, 4x4 enthusiasts, relied upon by local fishermen and holds significant cultural value for First Nations people. Prospecting and mining applications are granted ad hoc, with no long-term study in the form of a region-wide Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) into the cumulative effects of all the current and proposed mining, something Protect the West Coast (PTWC) has advocated since we were formed. Enough is enough. PTWC urges the public to appeal and comment on these two decisions respectively. Namibia has 200 abandoned mining sites requiring rehabilitation: A senior official in the Ministry of Mines and Energy says Namibia currently has approximately 200 abandoned mining sites requiring rehabilitation. Geological Survey of Namibia engineering geologist Giesberta Shaanika recently made a presentation on the risk assessment of abandoned mines in Namibia at a one-day environmental governance compliance workshop on small-scale mining held at Karibib. Shaanika said abandoned mining sites in Namibia are a legacy dating back to the 1900s, where the main mining activities were focused on gold, copper, zinc and silver, with no consideration of environmental protection. “As a result, we have a legacy of 200 abandoned mining sites thus far in Namibia. This is quite a big number. We have to rehabilitate them and we have few resources,” said Shaanika. One of the challenges faced by the ministry is that there is no mining closure framework in the country, which should include the small-scale sector. Shaanika said the ministry is conducting a mining closure inventory, of which is 50% completed, and once completed, will be shared with other stakeholders. At the moment, there are 900 small-scale mining claims in Namibia. The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through a global collaborative environmental programme between the UNDP and the Swedish Environmental Agency, aimed at providing resources to mineral rich nations to integrate environmental governance into small-scale mining activities, so that small-scale mining activities are conducted in an environmentally sound manner. These countries are Namibia, Equador, Colombia, Liberia, Mongolia, Peru, Kenya and Zambia. In Namibia, the programme is embedded in the UNDP’s Sustainable Environmental Management for Enhanced Resilience portfolio, whose focus areas are climate change adaptation, environment and waste management, climate change mitigation, natural resources management and sustainable livelihoods. In Namibia, UNDP decided to collaborate with the Ministry of Mines and Energy to put together a project titled ‘Strengthening Environmental Governance and Improving Health and Safety in Critical Small-Scale Mining Hotspots in Namibia’. Perpetua Resources' Stibnite Gold Project represents a win-win for the environment, Idaho’s economy, and for U.S. National Security. Located on one of the most historic mining districts in Idaho. The Stibnite site was home to thousands of miners, and similar to Minnesota's Iron Range, Stibnite was critical to the U.S. war effort in the 1940s and 1950s. The proposed project has been in development for the past decade and aims to mine both Gold and Antimony while also addressing environmental legacies which is already taking place voluntarily by Perpetua with site cleanup activities removing 300,000 tons of historic mine waste this past summer, courtesy of Iron Woman Construction & Environmental Services. Once operating, Perpetua would be the U.S.'s sole producer of mined Antimony, a critical mineral that is essential for national security. The antimony on site is the largest known resource of Antimony in the country and it’s one of largest not controlled by China or Russia, holding enough reserves that it could cover over 1/3 of U.S. Antimony demands during its first 6 years of production and could fully supplement annual DOD demands if needed. Antimony is used by every branch of the armed services, and serves as a key ingredient in fire retardants. The Department of Defense initially recognized the Stibnite site's strategic importance last year in December and again in August of this year with financial awards to Perpetua to assist in developing their project. Earlier this year, the Critical Minerals Institute identified Antimony as one of the fourteen most elusive Critical Minerals on the globe, meaning that not only is it a critical mineral in the U.S., but our closest allies in Europe, Canada and Australia deem Antimony critical as well. Building a Mine With Just a PEA The decision to proceed with building a mine based solely on a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) is a bold and contentious move within the mining industry. While a PEA provides a preliminary evaluation of a project's economic viability, relying solely on its findings entails inherent risks and potential rewards. A PEA serves as an initial feasibility study, offering a snapshot of a mining project's potential profitability based on limited data and assumptions. It outlines key project parameters such as capital and operating costs, production rates, and financial projections. However, it lacks the comprehensive detail and certainty provided by more advanced studies such as a Feasibility Study (FS) or a Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS). Building a mine based solely on a PEA involves navigating a delicate balance between risk tolerance and investment opportunity. On one hand, proceeding with construction at an early stage can expedite project development and capitalize on favorable market conditions. It allows mining companies to secure financing, initiate permitting processes, and establish a foothold in the market ahead of competitors. I will give out certain scenario here, You can have a high grade Gold vein Project where by in this case: -In terms of risk: Resource is good enough, high risk tolerance, private/public investor driven -In terms of Deposit:Relatively small, easy to mine deposit, low complexity -In terms of location:Historical production, access to site, power and water existing infrastructure, mining friendly, No ESG (Environmental,Social, and Governance) Problems and 'Easy' Permitting. In terms of Economics:Access to Capital CAPEX to OPEX,Low Capital Pre-Production Costs, has potential to Generate Economic Benefit. Therefore, despite the promising attributes of the project, including its high-grade resource, favorable location, and access to capital, the complexities and uncertainties inherent in mining can still present significant challenges that require careful consideration and strategic planning to overcome.
