This week's #SupporterSunday is Bruno de Jongh! "My colleagues from CBR Clinics and I are excited to announce that on the 13th of October 2024, we will be participating in a 10k run at Regent’s Park to raise funds for Bowel Research UK. Generations of my family have battled bowel cancer, with my great grandmother, grandmother, aunt, and other family members succumbing to this disease in their 60s. However, my mother, a true survivor, has defied the odds and is turning 70 this year. After we completed genetic testing a few years back, we found out my mother’s side of the family has Lynch Syndrome. This rare genetic condition that increases the risk of developing bowel cancer by 80%. I found out I also have the gene. By supporting our fundraising efforts, you will not only be helping us honour the memory of those who have gone through it, but also contributing to vital research that can potentially find better ways to tackle this disease in the future. Every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference in the fight against bowel cancer and Lynch Syndrome." Good luck today, #TeamBRUK! At Bowel Research UK, we’re supporting vital research aimed at understanding how mucinous colorectal cancers – cancers that grow in bowel cells that produce mucus – use this mucus to grow. The research team will examine how mucus provides an important part of the growth environment for these cancers, identifying specific proteins and sugars that support tumour growth. This study is essential for understanding the disease, which often has poorer survival rates compared to other bowel cancer types, and unlocking paths to developing new potential treatments. This study is led by Dr. Patrick Caswell at the University of Manchester. In 2021, following severe abdominal pain over the Christmas and New Year period, Eric ended up in Accident and Emergency where he was diagnosed with diverticulitis and had such severe inflammation that it had led to life-threatening sepsis. The sepsis meant Eric needed immediate emergency bowel surgery but when he woke up from the operation it was with a stoma, something he had no time to mentally prepare for. Read Eric's story for #DiverticularDiseaseAwarenessWeek at https://lnkd.in/eGHtsJnp You can listen to Eric's full video, which was recorded for our first #auguts campaign on our YouTube channel > https://lnkd.in/ecGUZfW3 #DiverticularDiseaseAwarenessWeek #DiverticularDisease #Diverticulum #BowelDisease #BowelResearch #GetParticularWithDiverticular #Diverticulitis
