NEWSFLASH | The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK), in collaboration with the East African Community Competition Authority, has recently indicated its intention to conduct a #marketinquiry into the fertiliser sector in Kenya. The purpose is to conduct an assessment in Kenya as well as across all the other EAC member states (being Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo). The CAK indicates that the Market Inquiry has been necessitated by fertiliser prices not decreasing in line with international market trends, coupled with the prioritisation of #foodsecurity in the region by EAC member states. Head of #CompetitionLaw | Kenya, Joyce Karanja, and senior associate, Mutugi Mutegi, provide further information here: https://lnkd.in/dRr6-QBd The CAK has invited written submissions to be sent to it by the public by 14 February 2025.

Protecting Uganda’s Economy: Regulating Raw Material Exports In an exclusive interview on Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) with Dennis Sigoa a proposal was discussed to regulate raw material exports in Uganda’s key sectors like agriculture and agro-processing. The unregulated export of essentials such as maize, sunflower seeds, and cotton has disrupted local industries, leading to price instability, underdevelopment, and reduced economic resilience. Key points include: • Challenges: Speculative buying by neighboring countries inflates raw material prices, destabilizing Uganda’s market. • Proposed Solutions: Introducing export levies, empowering oversight bodies like UGAFMA, and promoting value addition for industries like animal feed manufacturing and edible oil processing. • Benefits: Enhanced economic stability, job creation, increased export revenue from processed goods, and improved food security. This call to action emphasizes the need for regulatory policies, balanced trade agreements, and strategic partnerships to foster Uganda’s economic growth and sustainability. Let’s prioritize local industries and position Uganda as a leader in value-added production! #EconomicGrowth #AgroProcessing #PolicyReform #UBCInterview #MAAIF #buyugandabuildinguganda #Ministryoftradeuganda #MINISTRYOFFINANCEPLANNINGANDECONOMICDEVELOPMENTUganda

Dear President-Elect HE John Dramani Mahama, I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your well-deserved election as the President of the Republic of Ghana. Your victory signifies the trust and hope the people of Ghana have placed in your vision and leadership for our country’s future. As you prepare to lead us into a new chapter, I wish to draw your attention to an important area that requires immediate focus: the empowerment of farmers through capacity building in regenerative and precision agriculture. These modern farming methods are essential for increasing yields, promoting sustainability, and addressing the pressing challenges of food security and climate change. By investing in training programs and technological support, we can unlock the full potential of our agricultural sector and improve the livelihoods of countless farmers across the nation. Additionally, I urge your administration to facilitate market access for farmers’ produce and support the diversification of our local markets to include both organic and inorganic options. Creating such a marketplace will not only give buyers the freedom to choose but will also encourage healthier consumption patterns and increase demand for organic products, further driving innovation in agriculture. By prioritizing these initiatives, your leadership can create a robust agricultural ecosystem that fosters prosperity, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. I am confident that your government will take decisive steps to ensure that Ghanaian farmers are equipped to thrive and compete on both local and international markets. Once again, congratulations on your election. I wish you a successful tenure filled with remarkable achievements that uplift the lives of all Ghanaians. #CongratulationsGhana #FarmersFirst #PrecisionAgriculture #RegenerativeFarming #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSecurity #OrganicAndInorganic #LocalMarkets #EmpoweringFarmers #AgriRevolutionGhana #HealthyChoices #MarketAccess #FutureOfFarming Yours faithfully, Deloris Enyo Awalime

It’s so encouraging to see Kenyan authorities finally embracing biotech and opening up doors for its commercial production there. Kenya is an important agricultural producer and importer of maize. So, planting biotech maize and potential yield gains will help address food security issues and reduce import dependency.
