This is a good summary of an Future of Privacy Forum technologist roundtable on some of the tricky privacy issues regarding AI. Including a high-level explanation of how LLMs are trained. But clearly, lots of the tricky privacy questions are yet to be answered.
📍On November 27, 2024, FPF’s AI Center and Global Privacy team hosted a virtual Technologist Roundtable on Key Issues in AI and Privacy for data protection regulators and policymakers from around the globe. The convening covered a handful of complex technical questions related to large language models (LLMs) and their implications for data protection law and policy, with a special focus on: ➡️ The Basics of Transformer Technology and Tokenization ➡️ Training and Data Minimization, and ➡️ Memorization, Filters, and “Un-Learning.” FPF’s Rob van Eijk and Stacey Gray moderated a discussion with a wide range of technical experts, including Yves-Alexandre de Montjoye, David Weinkauf, PhD, Norman Sadeh, Niloofar Mireshghallah, Rachel Cummings, and Damien Desfontaines. I agree, the AI Clock is Ticking. Thanks Christopher Foo at Ropes & Gray for illustrating the timeline in the article titled "EU AI Act Published in the Official Journal of the European Union; Clock Starts for Compliance." With the Official Journal publication on July 12th, organizations are racing to beat the compliance clock. 🚀 The EDPS - European Data Protection Supervisor published a new guideline on generative AI and has taken a significant step towards ensuring the responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence within EU institutions, bodies, offices, and agencies. CAIDP Europe applauds the EDPS at aiming to support EUIs navigate the complex landscape of data protection obligations when developing or deploying generative AI tools.
