Believe we have to be vigilant for signs of softness in live events. Every analysis we have seen on the sector recently indicates continued strong growth ahead. However, in recent months I've seen a number of warning signs flash related to demand. I do wonder if we are seeing a case of highly attenuated demand fatigue as consumers slowly exhaust their post-COVID savings. The question was always if COVID generated a short-term "bump" in live or if it ushered in a (positive) reactionary "era" of live growth, a sort of roaring twenties. Most analysts believe the latter. It's that time of the year where the Composers & Authors Society SG has its annual award ceremony. I've been a full member since 1999/2000 and have been invited to this annual event yearly. As the organisation collects royalties on members' behalves, we are treated to this annual event which includes dinner and a show. I have also been engaged as the music director accompanying the award winners for 7 years in a row between 2007-2013 organising various groups from 12 pc big bands to smaller 5-6 member combos. This was always one of the highlights for me of being a member. However, this year things have changed unfortunately, not for the better. A member can attend without charge but if he/she brings a spouse a charge of $80 would be 'imposed' on the member , even a long standing one of 20 years or more. Why this change? I would surmise it is due to the recent change in leadership. It seems the original priorities of creating an association of like minded individuals promoting and collaborating in the creative arts (in this case composing and producing-arranging music) as a non profit, have changed to merely a profit driven entity concerned with creating more revenues. I always assumed that it was a non profit organisation. If the distribution was equitable and raised in line with revenues which have gone from a few million to tens of millions recently, I would support the cause, however the distribution to the majority of members remained the same since I first joined in 2000.

What a bargain of an offering!!

“To sell something familiar, you must make it surprising and to sell something surprising, you must make it familiar.” - Derek Thompson "MAYA" The four-letter acronym used to sell anything. MAYA = Most advanced yet acceptable In this TEDx talk, Mr.Thompson guides his audience on why people are drawn to particular things and a certain threshold between familiarity and surprise that people crave. One example he talks about is Spotify and its Discover Weekly feature. Each week this feature uploads 30 songs for their user to explore. At first, Spotify planned to have all 30 of the songs be brand new; however, there was a mistake in the algorithm. The mistake uploaded familiar artists and songs to the playlist. After Spotify corrected the mistake they saw engagement rapidly decline. In the end, it was Spotify discovering that by having a hint of familiarity in their platform, it allowed them to sell something new and surprising to their users. In this talk, there are more examples and stories that most people will end up recognizing while Mr. Thompson easily connects the dots between theories and real-world examples.

A great story about how important it is to remember the details. The Italian Market (many non-Philadelphians may remember the market from Rocky's famous run in the 1976 classic that ended up on the art museum steps). The market is the nation's oldest continuous operating market and stretches for several blocks on 9th Street in Philadelphia and is a hallmark of Philadelphia's Italian heritage" The annual festival stretches for 7 blocks and features 100's of vendors, music, parades, a hoagie competition, and a halfball tournament. However, the highlight is a competition to see who can ascent a 30 ft high pole greased with lard to claim prizes of meats, cheese, gift cards, and money that are tied to the top of the pole. It is also great practice for those fans eager to train on climbing streetlight poles when the Phillies or Eagles win championships (we don't get too much opportunity to practice here in Philadelphia - lol). It seems, this year, that someone forgot to arrange the crane that is used to remove the unclaimed meats and cheeses after the event. For 4 weeks, the "world's worst wind chime" has baked in the summer sun in the city leaking oils and unleashing stench on the innocent shoppers below. I think this is a great example - from a management standpoint - that no matter how great the idea is, no matter how flawlessly it is executed at the moment of truth, true success is measured in the details and the follow-up after the idea. https://lnkd.in/evmgEpc3
