You might have heard a few things about the Department for Education's draft guidance for schools on trans children and young people.
Here's 10 things you need to know:
1. Schools don't have to follow it because it's non-statutory.
2. It treats social transition as a last resort option and as inherently bad.
3. Transphobia and ableism are embedded throughout.
4. It doesn't actually offer any guidance on how to support trans children and young people (and doesn't use the word trans at all when referring to trans children and young people).
5. It prioritises the views of parents, carers, school staff and even other children and young people at the school about the views of trans children and young people.
6. It says that primary school staff shouldn't change the name or pronouns they use for a child, even if the parents/carers ask them to.
7. It says that secondary school staff don't have to respect the name or pronouns of trans children and young people.
8. It says that school staff should out trans children and young people to their parents/carers.
9. School staff following the guidance will risk breaching the Equality Act (2010), The Data Protection Act (2018), The Teaching Standards and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
10. The 'guidance' is a draft and currently out for consultation and we need you to respond to it. You've got until the start of March.
+ Trans adults - talk about the difference support would have made (or did make if you're very fortunate) for you at school.
+ Cis lesbian, gay or bi people - be sure to let them know that LGB+ people don't come out as trans for an "easier life" (yes, that old myth has been wheeled out once again).
+ Parents/carers of trans children or young people - talk about how this guidance makes you and your child feel, and what the impact could be on them.
+ Parents/carers of any child or young person - it's important that you respond to show that you're supportive of trans inclusive approaches within schools, you could talk about how inclusive approaches benefit everyone (including your own child).
+ Education staff and youth workers - talk about how this will impact the children and/or young people that you work with and the issues that will arise from implementing it.
And encourage your friends and family members to do the same. Don't copy and paste your answers (that risks them not being counted as separate answers), put it in your own words as much as possible.
