Hydrogen powered trucks are 2x the capital cost and 3x the operating cost of battery electric trucks. These numbers are very unlikely to improve for the reasons explained here: https://lnkd.in/dZXn9_SD
There is no way that fleet operators will be able to afford the costs of hydrogen trucks for any operation... QED.
It is time to stop waiting for the hydrogen industry to deliver 3 engineering miracles:
1. Engineering the vehicles to be sufficiently low cost to purchase, fuel and maintain to compete with EVs. Build an industry and supply chain to match.
2. Build an entire industry to manufacture sufficient green hydrogen at scale, given the vast amounts of renewable electricity needed to run hydrogen trucks (3x more electricity than EVs) https://lnkd.in/dJXkxi3f
3. Build a system that can deliver sufficient hydrogen to filling stations around the country and the world... noting that that filling stations are not connected by pipelines and it takes 18 hydrogen tube trailers at 700bar pressure to transport the same amount of energy as one diesel tanker.
The logistics industry needs to move forward quickly to decarbonise by 2050..not delay indefinitely, waiting for miracles.

Timely and important insights from Peterbilt Motors Company's Patrick Wallace on the coming wave of EV trucking regulations and why it’s important for fleets to electrify sooner, rather than later. As Patrick explains, with quickly approaching deadlines from CARB, the EPA and others, now is the time to start electrifying your fleet.

3rd Nikola truck catches on fire! 🔋 🔥 😲
A third Nikola battery-electric truck caught on fire in Arizona, but the company said the recalled trucks are still safe to drive with precautions such as parking outside and away from structures and leaving the main battery disconnect switch in the “on” position until the truck is repaired.
An internal investigation conducted with safety consultant from Exponent concluded the issue was a coolant leak inside a single battery pack. A single supplier component is the likely source of the leak, according to Nikola’s safety and engineering teams.
Romeo previously made these batteries and was acquired by Nikola. Nikola has since liquidated Romeo and allegedly moved battery production to their Coolidge facility. It was revealed that when Nikola acquired Romeo they were only producing enough batteries for 1 truck a day, and at over double the cost of the battery.
Do you think Nikola will be able to resolve this problem in a timely manner? Personally I think they will struggle as the cost will be very high!
Nikola also said that only two of 3,100 packs used on trucks built to date have been involved in fires — less than one-tenth of 1%.
Will you still be driving yours? I really don't know if I would trust it ahahaha.

It’s important to show the economic impact of mandating EV adoption too fast. If it’s too costly, there won’t be any trucking companies around, or the prices of goods will go through the roof due to sky high transportation costs (inflation).
Truckers are hitting pause on plans to introduce battery-electric big rigs, and Ryder System, Inc. wanted to find out why. The company took load and route data from 13,000 vehicles in its dedicated transportation services and calculated the cost difference between battery and diesel. It found the annual cost of operating battery-electric heavy-duty trucks is about double the cost of diesel trucks.
