REFLECTION ON #NSE CONFERENCE-#ABUJA2023 The Lord asked Moses in Ex4:2: “What do you have in your hand?” The walking stick became the solution when he acted on it as directed by God. The solution to the problem of every nation and every person, is already within the reach of the nation or person. It may look like ordinary walking stick though! may we be and May our nation find our Moses who will act on the stick to solve our problems! Coming out of the 4-day conference of Nigerian Engineers and listening to many technical papers presented, I wonder if our Engineers know that the solutions to our infrastructure gaps are expected from them, and are within their reach! Roads, power, technology, transportation, fuel and even food security. Most of the presentations focused on solutions that rely heavily on foreign inputs! - our roads could be paved with interlocked stones. We have rocks in abundance in Nigeria. We simply need the technology to convert rocks to interlock-able stones to pave our roads. Egyptians built the pyramid with stones. Many European city roads were paved with stones centuries ago and they are there till date. - our food supply should be supported by manure from biomass instead of imported synthetic alternatives! We have the population of people and animals to supply good quantity - our domestic gas needs should be significantly supported with biogas with bio-digesters introduced to Nigerian households at affordable cost - our housing should be re-engineered to reduce cooling needs by constructing with readily available clay and other materials within the reach of our communities instead of Portland cement - could we develop other means of moving our goods and people around instead of imported vehicles? Canoes built with mainly local inputs? We can channel bodies of water we have around our country into network of waterways for boats and canoes just as we create rail tracks! I can go on and on. The technology (how to make, operate and maintain in the most efficient way) is the technology that will make the above happen! The research we need is that which will find solutions to our problems using MAINLY locally available inputs. Reunion: I met Engr AY decades after we worked together in the same factory and we left for different companies. It was really refreshing catching up with a lot of my former colleagues in different companies too. #RetiredButRefiring #RetirementIsSweet #NSEabuja2023

IFC's PPP Advisory collaborated with the government and experts from The World Bank to improve the cleanliness of the Ganga river. They introduced the innovative Hybrid-Annuity PPP Model (HAM) specifically for the sewage sector. This allowed the construction and sustainable operation of sewage treatment plants along the river. To enhance the attractiveness of the projects for bidders and reduce costs for the government, IFC devised creative approaches to increase revenue opportunities. For instance, they facilitated the sale of treated wastewater to the Indian Oil Corporation, which utilized it to cool its refinery, thereby saving 20 million liters of fresh water daily. The success of this initiative has paved the way for numerous additional sewage treatment PPPs to be established along the sacred Ganga river. This transformative project has had a significant impact on improving the state of the Ganga river and its significance in the overall transformation of India.
