Raksha Bandhan celebrates bonds of love and protection, but this year, it’s hard to overlook the tragic incident of a PGT doctor at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata. As someone who has cherished the bonds formed with colleagues during my early years at Kem Med College Pune, SCB Med College Cuttack, VSS Medical College Burla Sambalpur, and Behrampur Med College, Behrampur of Orissa, this incident hit close to home. My long hours discussing on any topic, spent at PGT Dr's hostels, of those times , that I still cherish. Many amongst them are today top consultants in the country and abroad, and with whom my bonds of friendships are still the same. But the recent news has been unsettling, especially with reports of protests, evidence tampering, and the appalling conditions female doctors endure in government hospitals — - common washrooms for all genders - lack of restrooms - and deplorable facilities. Raksha Bandhan is about protection, but what are we doing to protect those who save lives? This isn’t just about one crime; it’s about ensuring safety and dignity for all our healthcare professionals. This Raksha Bandhan, let’s honor the true essence of the festival by committing to safer, more respectful workplaces for everyone. What do you think?

The picture captured a powerful moment: a community, particularly older women who often get neglected in healthcare access, finally having the opportunity to prioritize their well-being. Among them was Rohini Devi (name changed), a 68-year-old woman whose calloused hands spoke volumes about a life of hard work. For years, Rohini had ignored the persistent aches and pains, dismissing them as just part of ageing. However, the awareness sessions conducted at the Swastha Sawari camp brought her a realization. The doctor patiently listened to her concerns and conducted a thorough examination. The diagnosis found high blood pressure with a potential risk of Arthritis of Knees which came as a shock, but it was also a turning point. Rohini, who had attributed her fatigue to simply "getting old," now understood the root cause. Rohini left the camp with essential medication and knowledge for lifestyle and weight management. She was referred to the nearby Gawahati Medical College and Hospital for further test and checkups. All the other women received information on preventive healthcare, the importance of regular checkups, and how to manage chronic conditions. DOES IT MATTER ? The rural health care in India is in shambles, people are voiceless and abandoned. In most Govt hospitals in the rural areas, used syringes are washed and reused, medical equipments are outdated and non-existent. People and children die because of lack of medical infrastructure and medical staff. DATA ON MEDICAL INFRASTRUCTURE There were more than 3,000 doctor vacancies at 31 large Central government hospitals Vacancies of nurses and support staff were more than 21,000. Outside the big cities, the lack of specialised care is especially acute. The government says there was a near 80% shortage of surgeons, physicians, gynaecologists and paediatricians at community health centres in rural India as of March 2022. In Chhattisgarh, which is among India’s poorest states and also has a significant Indigenous population, there’s about one doctor for every 16,000 people. By comparison, the urban capital of New Delhi has one doctor for around every 300 people. STORY:- In Muzaffarpur, Bihar, a doctor in a Govt hospital had to put a Corrugated cardboard on the broken leg of the patient , because the plaster was not available in the hospital.
