The Power of "We": Building Communities That Thrive in the Age of Isolation In today's digital landscape, connection seems more accessible than ever. Yet, a sense of isolation and a yearning for true community linger. This isn't a paradox; it's a call to action for businesses and individuals alike. Here's the truth: Building a thriving community isn't about endless social media posts or forced interactions. It's about cultivating a space where people feel valued, heard, and empowered to connect. So, how do we bridge this gap? 1. Define Your "Why": What value will your community bring? Is it industry-specific knowledge sharing, fostering collaboration, or simply creating a space for like-minded individuals? A clear purpose attracts the right audience and fuels engagement. 2. Foster Open Dialogue: Encourage active participation. Ask thought-provoking questions, initiate polls, and respond thoughtfully to comments. Let your community know their voices matter. 3. Celebrate Achievements (Big and Small): Recognize individual and collective wins. Showcase success stories and milestones. This fosters a sense of shared accomplishment and motivates continued participation. 4. Embrace Diverse Perspectives: A thriving community thrives on variety. Encourage respectful debates, acknowledge different viewpoints, and foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their unique voice. 5. Give Back, Together: Identify a cause your community cares about and find ways to contribute as a group. Volunteer your time, organize fundraising events, or simply leverage your collective voice to raise awareness. Remember, community building is a continuous process. It requires dedication, a willingness to adapt, and a genuine passion for connection. Now, let's turn this knowledge into action! Share your best community-building tips in the comments! What are some challenges you've faced? How have thriving communities benefitted your professional or personal life? By fostering meaningful connections, we can create a world where the power of "we" empowers individuals and businesses alike. Ready to dive deeper? One of the first actions I take when facilitating large groups is to have participants break into small groups of two to four people. I provide a discussion prompt tailored to the context of the gathering. For example, to foster connection within a team or Board of Directors, I might say, “Share something that made you smile recently.” (Chad Littlefield’s decks are great resources for prompts!) In a community gathering focused on a pressing issue, I might ask, “Why is it important for you to be here today?” The aim is to invite everyone’s voice into the space and foster connections from the outset, because, as Margaret Wheatley says, “If you want a system to be healthy, connect it to more of itself.” #Facilitation #Community #Connection

Beyond the practical facets of engaging communities - targeting, reaching, communicating and engaging with people from sometimes marginalised and vulnerable groups - there's the approach you take That's why, in looking to co-create a Shared Learning System for Transformational Community Engagement with organisational practitioners and community participants, we'll be looking at how as much as the what of its practice. Before you can optimise impact through centring lived experience, you have to be ready to shift power. For you to be willing and able to shift power, however, you have to understand how this is valuable for your organisation. All of this goes to the why, which is creating solutions which mutually benefit organisations as much as it does communities. To do that, we have to get to the root causes of what hinders our organisations in creating social possibilities which enable everyone to thrive. Come join us this Thursday 21st March on Zoom, so that we can dig into the holistic perspectives on the biggest challenges and opportunities facing organisations in delivering community engagement, prioritise what we should be focusing on and informing our (funding dependent) plan for the next five years. https://lnkd.in/egXU8faC

How you deliver community engagement can be an absolute game changer, for your organisations and the communities you exist to serve. Yet, so many organisations get caught up in what it looks like, mirroring the behaviours of the very systems that community engagement has potential to change. This Thursday, me, Vimla Appadoo and Clara Parada are facilitating an online session to understand how we can share our learning and best enable organisations to undertake transformational community engagement. Fancy joining us?
