How one bank interaction impacts on its lifetime customer value... TLDR: which bank would you recommend to set up a business account for a Community Interest Company (CIC) in the UK? And why? After a digital tennis match of information overload with Starling Bank to open an account for Inspiration North® CIC - I got the answer back yesterday. More or less – “we can’t help you yet.” “And we don’t give out individual reasons why.” I figured as our Work Pirates® account is already with them, this might help. Sadly not. Perhaps as the business model isn’t fleshed out fully. I’ll never know. Made me think back to another example. It was 2005. I had decided to leave the property business in France, and head to Sweden to do my MBA at the Stockholm School of Economics. Like my parents, I’d banked with Barclays all my life. They were unable to help me with funding towards the course. So, I looked around. In steps Gregg Carnaffan – my knight in shining armour. Or in this case, a smart suit. He was managing the HSBC branch in South Shields at the time. We talked it through and he saw the value. My Dad offered to be guarantor, and we opened an account. And I’m forever grateful to them both as that opened so many new doors. And subsequently I met Laura Maisey when I worked in New York City from 2008. The small world of her having been to Northumbria University and her knowing Gregg too! She opened my US HSBC account and it was a professional and friendly experience. I’ve been with HSBC ever since. 2 interactions that mean Barclays won’t ever manage my accounts again. And based on my experience with Starling. Inspiration North CIC won’t be banking with them either. And we’ll see for Work Pirates going forward. If compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world, I wonder what the financial implications are for banks that compound multiple customer experiences like mine over the years? A pretty penny no doubt. Oh well. I don't let such small things deter me. At Comerica Bank, Professional Development is a key focus and a great example of one of our Core Values: The Bigger Possible – Where we encourage a culture of bold and relentless curiosity. This week, there was an exciting display of strategy and innovation at our annual CBA BankCom workshop. During this 5-day workshop, colleagues work collaboratively in teams, assuming the roles of MEC members, running a $5+ billion fictional bank. In a fast-paced environment where each day equated to a year, teams crafted and executed decisions on brand strategy, segment targeting, and product selection, among other critical aspects. This simulation served as a vibrant canvas for them to paint their strategies, experiencing firsthand the ripple effects of their decisions in a competitive banking landscape. As the workshop unfolded, each team adapted and responded to the dynamic market conditions presented in the simulation. The real-time feedback on their financial strategies mirrored the intensity and excitement of an actual earnings call, fostering a deeper understanding of market dynamics and honing decision-making skills. The grand finale of the workshop saw each team presenting a recap of their journey, highlighting their successes, opportunities, and the rich learnings acquired throughout the workshop.
