Reflecting on a Milestone Morning: The Inaugural Advisory Board Breakfast for AFC Bamber Last Sunday morning, I had the privilege of attending the very first advisory board breakfast meeting - a gathering that marks a significant milestone for our footballing community. As I sipped my tea and conversed with my fellow board members and club assistants, I was struck by the collective wisdom, passion, and dedication at the table. This wasn't just about the delicious breakfast; ( Norman Jepson Beefeater ) it was about laying the foundation for a future where our members can thrive through collaboration and mutual support in our weekly kickabout sessions, or by joining the team in our newly FA-accredited club. 🔍 Key Takeaways: Collaboration Over Competition: The power of sharing knowledge and resources can propel us further than working in isolation. Today, we pledged to build bridges, not walls. Innovation as a Lifeline: In a rapidly changing world, adaptability and innovation are not just buzzwords but our lifeline. We discussed fostering a culture that embraces change and challenges the status quo. Support Systems: Building a robust support system for all our members is crucial. Whether it's navigating life's challenges or exploring new coaching methods, knowing you have a trusted network makes the journey much less daunting. As club secretary, I left the meeting feeling inspired and energised, the path ahead is bright, and together, we can achieve remarkable things. #AFCBamber #Football #MensMentalHealth #MentalHealth

🏴 ENGLAND HAVE JUST LOST THE EURO'S FOOTBALL FINAL.......⚽️ The team are feeling down so what now? 🖥️ During a Group Coaching session on Leadership with John Amaechi OBE Giant Community, Schwartz Rounds (SR) was mentioned and during the group I went on to explain what they are (as a Trained SR Facilitator), and the significance for the English football team. ⛑️ Schwartz Rounds derived from healthcare, are a structured forum where staff, from all disciplines come together to discuss and reflect on a difficult emotional social issue or experience. The purpose of Rounds is to be reflective and understand the challenges and rewards (not to problems), to help staff feel more supported in their jobs. ☹️ Sadly, England lost in the final and you can imagine the mental turmoil on the players as well as the effect of the responses from the public and media alike. 🏴 So how can Schwartz rounds help the England team? (Or your Team) 🤔 Start by asking yourself NOT what you could have done differently or how you could have ‘fixed’ the problem, BUT how the experience impacted on you. What were its particular challenges? What techniques did you use to cope with the situation? Has it changed the way you work? If so, how? 👨👩👧👦 Evidence shows that staff who attend Rounds feel less stressed and isolated, with increased insight and appreciation for each other’s roles. They also help to reduce hierarchies between staff and to focus attention on the relational aspect. This was hugely important during #Covid as healthcare staff shared their own stories which were relatable amongst their teams and brought them closer. 🗣️Schwartz rounds should not replace a formal debrief or support mechanisms, but it is about establishing a safe, confidential and comfortable forum for participants to speak - which is much needed right now! 🙏🏿 Please note - Rounds need to be in a trusted and psychologically safe environment. In addition it needs to be done by a skilled & an experienced facilitator. 👂🏿Happy to Hear how you may deal with difficult, emotional, social issues or experiences at work. 🏆 Off course the World Cup is in 2026, you never know! #SchwartzRounds #Reflection

A good read which highlights significant perspectives of business & sport team governance & management . Especially assessing sports clubs through a consistent business lense when they are essentially not for profit.
“All too often head coaches are unfairly singled out when things go awry. Although they have an outsized influence day to day, responsibility for the team’s performance is shared by the board and CEO.” 📝 A thoughtful, detailed essay by Jason Stockwood, chair of Grimsby Town. Many of his observations about the nature of running a football club may surprise people. https://lnkd.in/g-kBd9SV

Diversity starts at the top
I attended another great AICD event this week. The topic of diversity on boards is an important one. Here are some of my take-aways: - the chair must set the expectation and ensure follow-through with action - use a board composition matrix rather than a skills matrix - and revisit it regularly - remuneration is important particularly to address NFP challenges - ie. those that can afford to volunteer are not necessarily the ones that will bring diversity It was lovely chatting with you Shelley Wall and Dr Gerald Featherstone GAICD - and hearing about all the wonderful work you do! Thanks to the Australian Institute of Company Directors team for hosting.
