Great architecture resonates with its environment. I was recently admiring a bit of Pattersons work, and I was reminded of this awesome example of exactly that - Scrubby Bay House on Bank's Peninsula, Canterbury. The design obviously fits in with aesthetics of the site ridiculously well, drawing clear inspiration from the color & texture palette of the environment and the region's built heritage - something that I always like to see not only for beauty's sake, but also to minimise the visual impact on the environment. Also, how good's that aged cedar roofing?! Less obviously, but more importantly, the design also responds well to the site's climate. The difference between good climate design and bad/no climate design is massive, which is why I think it's so important - it has a huge impact on comfort, energy use, sustainability, resilience and durability. In this case, the climate's a pretty tricky one, with its blistering hot/dry summers and howling freezing sideways-raining winters (anyone who's spent a decent amount of time on Bank's Peninsula will know what I mean). The design responds to this by: - Offering the ability for the interior to unfold to enjoy those glorious hot summer days. - Providing plenty of openings to bring the stunning views, natural light, and fresh air inside. - Using large glazed areas with no eave to maximise the capture of the sun's energy/warmth during the cold winter months. - Being able to close up/hunker down with shutters and sliding panels to brace against the site's harsh winter exposure. It might seem a bit odd for me to be hyping up a competitor's work - but credit where credit's due! New case study: Creating a more lettable asset for Columbia Threadneedle Investments in Cambridge ---------- Woodhouse were engaged by Columbia Threadneedle Investments EMEA APAC to refurbish a 27,000 square foot space in Building 2000, Cambridge Research Park into a more attractive and #sustainable environment. The project involved works to both interior and exterior elements to enhance the building's appeal and functionality, making it more a more lettable asset. Works included creating a more modern reception area, refurbishing the ground floor to a Cat A standard, spraying the exterior frame to anthracite (previously blue), refreshing the WCs, and improving the M&E systems throughout. The works have resulted in raising the #EPC rating from an E to a B, and achieving #BREEAM 'Very Good' - a fantastic achievement!
