📍 Moor Lane, Bolton. Step Places faced an extremely tight funding deadline for securing planning permission for the Moor Lane site, in part due to its significant strategic importance within the 2017 Bolton Town Centre Framework. A 'key intervention area' and not to mention a vital route for improving pedestrian movement across the town, the site was already of significant interest to local politicians, stakeholders and the community. On top of all that, half of the site lies within the Town Hall Conservation Area, and in the setting of two important listed buildings. Our challenge was therefore... 🏘️ Get the design absolutely right ⌛ Do so incredibly quickly Intrigued? It's great to see #architects collaborating to advocate for simple planning changes that can make a measurable difference in improving the number of new homes delivered. I have a few more examples of this kind of advocacy that I'll share throughout the week. #housingcrisis #architecture #solutions
A group of architects says a simple change to planning rules would allow for up to 20 more apartments to be built on mid-rise projects without any loss of amenity, and it amounts to this: lose the wedding cake look. Setbacks, which are often imposed by councils to reduce visual bulk and shadowing, taper buildings towards their top, but increase construction costs and carbon emissions and reduce housing supply, four leading architects say. Their call to abolish upper-level setbacks is made in a letter to be handed to Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny today, signed by Dan McKenna, kerstin thompson, Andrew Maynard, and Jeremy McLeod. https://lnkd.in/gRnCuPru #housing #housingcrisis #architecture #melbourne #auspol #springst Jonathan O'Brien YIMBY Melbourne

One critical advantage of New Urbanism is that it blends residential, commercial, and retail spaces within the same multi-family development. This approach fosters a strong sense of community, making it easier for residents to connect and engage with their local environment. Morris Square in Charleston is a prime example of how small-scale developers can successfully implement New Urbanism. Allison Ramsey Architects played a crucial role in this vibrant, mixed-use community, designing everything from single-family homes to large mixed-use buildings alongside townhouses, a duplex, and a quadruplex. For small-scale developers, the growing focus on multi-family housing within New Urbanism represents more than a passing trend. It marks a significant transformation in the way cities are planned and lived in. The idea of municipal architects in the UK generally conjures a particular era in our minds. The 1960s and 70s were a time of bold public building programmes. But, has the heyday of municipal architecture passed? Holly Lewis looks back to the future for TheMJ on her newest role as Town Architect for London Borough of Hackney where she is supporting the council’s existing in-house design teams in the delivery of an exciting range of programmes and projects. How can we re-invent the town/city architect role for the current local authority climate in 2024? 👀 https://lnkd.in/etV6R5sg #townarchitect #purpose #designchampion #London #Stadsarkitekter
