👥 “Everything we deliver in the community for the community is driven by what local people tell us they need.”     Over the last 10 years, Back on the Map in Sunderland has supported residents to develop local services, activities and opportunities in direct response to the challenges they are facing.      Everything that they deliver in the community is driven by what local residents say they need.      🏘️ One of their first priorities was to bring empty and run down private rented homes in the area back into use, and to turn them into decent, affordable and secure homes for residents in housing need.     The film below shows the transformative changes that wrap around support has had on local residents’ lives. Wrap around support includes:      - peer support   - activities that focus on supporting well-being   - learning something new or support with financial or housing matters. 📢 The message from Back On The Map is that the problem of hardship in neighbourhoods has been decades in the making. A long-term cross-party commitment from national and local government to tackle it, that gives communities like Hendon the tools to protect each other from hardship, not sticking plasters, is desperately needed.      This is the second film in our series giving voice to organisations that are working in innovative ways to protect people from hardship in their communities.

Sharing an excellent report that's just been launched: Community-led Housing for All. Housing co-operatives and community-owned housing present a viable means for addressing Oxford's affordable housing crisis, by creating homes that are permanently affordable - as opposed to "affordable homes" sold on the private market that are only affordable the first time they are sold... Research shows that Black and Ethnic Minority individuals find themselves at the sharp end of the affordable housing crisis and yet are underrepresented in the co-operative and community-led housing sector (though this hasn't always been the case; there is a rich history of Black-led housing co-ops in the UK). This report looks at the barriers BME communities face in accessing community-led housing and shares recommendations to facilitate participation. Co-authored by community-led housing practitioners Henri Baptiste and Claude Hendrickson MBE, alongside researchers from University of Liverpool and Sheffield Hallam University. The DC Office of Planning is undertaking a public life study in Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant thanks to an allocation from DC Council. This study is a comprehensive effort to improve the quality and use of public spaces in Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant through data-driven analysis, guideline development, and inclusive community engagement. It includes four components: Inclusive Engagement, a Public Life Assessment, Design Guidelines, and a Sidewalk Vending Study. https://lnkd.in/e7fiNa5T
