Do you, like me, pack everything and the kitchen sink to manage training programs? Packing what you need to manage a training course can be challenging, especially if you're travel to different locations, don't assume you can buy it on arrival. I once spent 3 hours walking the streets of Washington DC looking for a power adapter! Here are a few things I learnt: ✅ conduct a needs assessment with your key players to identify the goals, objectives, and content of the training course. This will help you determine what materials, equipment, and resources you will need onsite. 🤔 keep in mind the adult learning principles when designing and developing your training materials. iPads are great, but most people like a pad and pen. 🛅 organize and label your training materials clearly and logically. Use folders, binders, bags, or boxes to store and transport your materials. Have a checklist! If you can prep materials in advance great! 🛳 ship items in smaller units, local customs can hold shipments up, especially when the contents have a high value such as books. Lots of small deliveries is better than none. 😤 your delegates will forget something, have a spare or two of everything: power adapters, phone chargers, anything you're asking them to bring. Assume they won't! I love my work! 🤣

One-off training doesn't work. No matter how good a training session is, one-off training almost never delivers long term results. Even if the training is fun, with great activities, and a funny presenter, research shows we forget most of what we hear within hours of leaving the room. That's why I, and a growing number of trainers, include support for trainees AFTER they leave the training room. If you'd like to know how I, along with some of the trainers I admire a lot, make sure training sticks and delivers real results, you can read about it in my very first Fast Company article here: https://buff.ly/3QjyRqU A big shout out to my co-author and general all round star - Deborah Riegel! I couldn’t have done it without her 😀 PLUS, I'm excited to announce the upcoming launch of a new book on this very topic. "39 Ways to Make Training Stick" will publish in January 2024.... let me know if you'd like to be part of the launch team!

Making creating training quicker, easier and less stressful by providing little and often on-demand and PRACTICAL support for busy LONE L&D professionals
Don't be a snob. There's absolutely no reason to look down on ready-written #training materials. There's no need to assume that they are automatically poor quality. As if using them is dirty. As if it’s cheating, or it means you are admitting that you aren’t able to create your own training. None of this is true. Why is it better to take a well-known theory, some useful insight and invest hours to create bespoke training every time? Why spend ages creating an activity from scratch? If it’s already been done, why do you need to do it too? It feels like a massive waste of time, effort and money. This is why they shouldn’t necessarily be avoided! Using ready-written training materials allows you to: ⏲️ Save time 🏖️ Save effort 💶 (and this generally means saving money) 💡 Pick up different ways of bringing the theory to life 👷♀️ Build a bespoke solution QUICKLY based on solid foundations So they are DEFINITELY worth checking out - especially as we near the end of the tax year! You buy off the shelf clothing after all... Learn when ready-written materials can help and when they are best avoided HERE: https://lnkd.in/etT6AxQc

Instructional Designer Specializing in Train-the-Trainer Programs | Author of "Instructional Design on a Shoestring" and "What's Your Formula?" | All-Around Training Nerd
This past weekend was such a good reminder that while many of us are in L&D and our instinct may be to embrace the design and development of training programs, sometimes the solution to people's problems already exists (and they don't need to complete an entire training course to get what they need). Over the weekend, the garbage disposal in my sink wasn't working, and the idea of attending some sort of plumbing or general kitchen maintenance course never entered my mind. I went to YouTube and found a good troubleshooting video and within 5 minutes the garbage disposal was back to grinding up food scraps. If you're looking for some ways to help people learn something new without always needing to use a classroom training or an elearning module, the following document may be helpful (it's one of 40+ job aids, checklists and other resources from my new book, Instructional Design on a Shoestring... if you'd like more info on the actual book, I've put a link into the comments).

At our Rawlplug Academy® Training Centre, we offer a range of educational and development courses to professionals in the construction industry to help them expand their knowledge, skills and expertise. All our Academy® training courses have three stages: theoretical, transitional and hands-on. Here’s a snapshot of what each stage involves 👇 ✅ Theoretical Stage The theoretical stage is the classroom part of the training, and it encourages active participation from the trainees. In the theoretical stage, trainees will: ✔️ Receive a presentation of the technical parameters, features and competitive advantages of the products ✔️ Gain knowledge about the context of profits in day-to-day operations in terms of quality, costs and lead time ✔️ Learn the necessary tools through multimedia presentations, video tutorials and product display units. ✅ Transitional Stage Our transitional stage is crucial preparation for the hands-on stage, and during this part of the training, we consolidate and verify the knowledge already acquired in the previous stage. This involves: ✔️ Discussing the display of key products in the respective groups, taking into account their specificities and market advantages ✔️ Selecting products and their accessories for subsequent use in the hands-on part ✔️ Learning about the classification of the products in the given group, their potential applications and installation instructions ✔️ Training in regards to appropriate product selection, which will take into account the applications, cost optimisation, installation time, safety and durability in us. ✅ Hands-on Stage The hands-on stage allows participants to take the information and knowledge learnt from the theory session and apply it to the practical elements of the training, which involves: ✔️ Understanding and implementing installation best practices, such as identifying the relevant tools needed for any given fixing, finding setting and spacing information, and installing based on the setting and spacing information. ✔️ Ensuring tool safety and relevant PPE are observed and worn while operating tools. ✔️ Inspecting and testing fixings and anchors to ensure they are safe and correctly installed. If they don't sell a training prop, sometimes you have to make it yourself. Are your employees ready for LOTO? Visual aids and hands-on training enhance learning by engaging multiple senses, making complex concepts easier to understand and remember. They foster active participation, boost retention, and cater to diverse learning styles, leading to more effective and enjoyable education experiences. #BuildingABetterEnvironment #waterinfrastructure #construction #training #adultlearning
