When Teachers are Scolding kids in School what impact on brain of Kids Science? When teachers scold children in school, it can have several impacts on their brain and overall psychological well-being. The science behind these impacts involves various aspects of neuroscience and psychology. Here are some key points: ### 1. Stress Response - **Activation of the Amygdala**: Scolding can activate the amygdala, the brain region involved in processing emotions, particularly fear and anxiety. This activation triggers a stress response. - **Release of Stress Hormones**: The stress response leads to the release of cortisol and adrenaline. Chronic exposure to these hormones can negatively affect brain development and function. ### 2. Impact on Learning and Memory - **Hippocampus**: High levels of cortisol can impair the function of the hippocampus, a brain region crucial for memory formation and learning. This can make it harder for children to retain information and focus on tasks. - **Prefrontal Cortex**: Stress can also impair the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions such as decision-making, problem-solving, and self-control. ### 3. The constant state of stress and fear can make children more susceptible to these conditions. - **Self-Esteem**: Scolding can negatively affect a child's self-esteem, making them feel inadequate or unworthy. This can lead to withdrawal from social interactions and a reluctance to participate in classroom activities. - **Behavioral Issues**: Some children might respond to scolding with defiance or aggression, leading to a cycle of negative behavior and further disciplinary actions. ### 4. Long-Term Effects - **Cognitive Development**: Chronic stress during critical developmental periods can lead to long-term cognitive deficits. It can affect brain structure and connectivity, impacting intelligence and academic performance. - **Social and Emotional Skills**: Children who are frequently scolded may struggle with developing healthy social and emotional skills. They might find it challenging to form positive relationships and manage their emotions effectively. ### Positive Alternatives Instead of scolding, positive reinforcement and constructive feedback are more effective in promoting a healthy learning environment. Techniques such as positive behavior interventions, praise for good behavior, and clear, consistent expectations ..... In conclusion, while occasional scolding may be a part of discipline, frequent and harsh scolding can have detrimental effects on a child's brain and psychological well-being. Understanding these impacts can help educators adopt more positive and supportive disciplinary methods.

Play-based curriculums are the best opportunities for preparing a child/ren for their transition to school and for life long learning. We know this - research confirms it. I believe as early childhood educators we must stay dedicated to sharing this information and the research of professionals such as Neuroscience Educator, Nathan Wallis. In Australia, we see so often children starting school before they are 5 yrs old, yet the research shows they should not be entering formalised learning until they are 6 or 7 yrs. To save confusion for well intending families (who believe their child/ren will be advantaged by surrounding them by older children in formalised learning environments) firstly the school starting age needs to change and advocacy for extended time spent in a play based preschool curriculum will see children with a love of learning, higher self esteem, socially responsible, increased resilience and therefore reaching their potential. Let's allow our children the opportunity to grow and develop in a way that is organic to them rather than pushing them towards formal learning before they are ready. 10moSchools need to adjust their approach for students with attentional and developmental challenges. I can say confidently (as a former special educator) that students I taught, who were engaged with Brain Balance, had "tools" in their tool kits that some of my other students simply did not. Reject the null-hypothesis... There's something important going on here.
