MENTAL HEALTH in Economic Survey’24 I was captivated to read about #mentalhealth in the Economic Survey. Initially, it caught me thinking as to why would this subject be included in #EconomicSurvey. However, to my pleasant surprise, authorities are also acknowledging the ever-increasing mental health issues and the impact of these on the #productivity of a person and the larger impact to the #economicgrowth. My discussions with friends and colleagues suggest that this is a much more grave issue than what reported numbers tell us. I would urge anyone reading this who is going through a difficult time and struggling to manage all by themselves to consider reaching out for help. Trust me, world is kinder than we think at times! Connecting Trust is an NGO that provides free #listeningservice to anyone going through any distress. You may consider trying this out. Disclaimer – I am volunteering at this NGO. Excerpt from Economic Survey’24 - "In the Indian context, the National Mental Health Survey (NMHS) 2015-16 showed that 10.6 per cent adults suffered from mental disorders in India while treatment gap for mental disorders ranged between 70 to 92 per cent for different disorders. At an aggregate economic level, mental health disorders are associated with significant productivity losses due to absenteeism, decreased productivity, disability, increased healthcare costs, etc."

Mental health issues have seen a steady rise globally with India accounting for nearly 15 percent of the global mental health burden. We have the dual burden of a high number of cases with societal stigma and a lack of awareness that prevents most individuals from seeking help. It is estimated that 1 in 7 Indians are living with a mental health disorder with a treatment gap close to 80%. At the workplace too a large number of the Indian workforce experience mental health issues. Recognising this problem, the government has passed the Mental Healthcare Act of 2017 which aims to safeguard individuals against discrimination at the workplace and recognises the importance of creating an environment where sharing such struggles is encouraged. To understand this complex issue, we are privileged to have the very eminent Dr. Samir Parikh address all Agilus employees on Workplace Mental Health on 10 January 2024 at 12 noon. Dr Samir Parikh, Chairperson Fortis National Mental Health Programme is a renowned psychiatrist who has played a significant role in enhancing the image and reach of mental health across the country. Shocking Mental Health Reality in India Mental health remains one of the most pressing yet overlooked issues in India. Consider this: Over 190 million people in India suffer from mental health disorders. India accounts for a staggering 36.6% of global suicides among women. The treatment gap is a shocking 70-92%, meaning most who need help aren't receiving it. An estimated 56 million people in India are suffering from depression. 38 million people in India are affected by anxiety disorders. These numbers aren't just statistics—they're lives affected by stigma, lack of resources, and inadequate support. At Athena Behavioral Health, we are committed to changing this narrative. In India, mental health disorders have a high prevalence, impacting a considerable proportion of the population. Epidemiological studies report prevalence rates for psychiatric disorders varying from 9.5 to 370 per 1000 people in India. This prevalence encompasses a broad spectrum of mental health disorders, reflecting the diverse challenges individuals face in the country. The prevalence rates of mental health disorders in India highlight the need for effective interventions and support systems to address the mental well-being of the population. Family Dynamics and Societal Pressure Family dynamics and societal expectations pressure individuals, impacting their mental well-being. Expectations related to education, career success, marriage, and gender roles can create significant stress and anxiety. Interpersonal conflicts, strained relationships, and dysfunctional family dynamics can also contribute to developing mental health issues. In some cases, the stigma associated with mental illness within families can lead to a lack of understanding and support, further hindering the individual's ability to seek help. Addressing mental health issues becomes crucial not only for the well-being of affected individuals but also for the overall progress and development of the nation. As the country’s economy advances, the prevalence of mental health conditions is rising, influenced by societal pressures and economic stress. The survey underscores the need for increased funding for mental health services and advocates for their integration into primary care. This approach aims to make support more accessible and reduce the stigma around mental health issues. Additionally, the survey emphasises the importance of preventive measures and raising awareness to address mental health concerns before they escalate.
