I get this question a lot, and the short answer is....(Drumroll, please.) No, you definitely don't have to be able to do fancy poses to be a yoga teacher. Because we practice yoga through our bodies, it's common to mistake physical prowess for an "advanced practice." But the intention of yoga is not performative. We practice asana: 1) To improve the quality of our embodiment 2) To prepare for sitting in stillness (meditation) There are certainly other benefits (celebrating aliveness, increasing energy, testing our capacity, using the body as an ally for becoming present, etc.), but the body is an instrument for this journey - not the destination. Consider music. We care for the instrument and we play the instrument...but the point is the music. And just like your asana, that music can be slow, showy, sweet, brassy...and everything in between. And we enjoy different music at different times. We need all kinds of music ~ and we need all kinds of yoga. #teachingtips #yoga #yogainstructor #yogateacher
