Building on a decade of success, the Graphene Flagship has now continued its journey under the European Commission's Horizon Europe funding programme and in October split into a fleet of separately funded projects. Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and one coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials (2DM) with the common goal to commercialise graphene. The projects work on applications in key areas from composites and energy to biomedical and electronics. Fundamental work on emerging 2DM is also being addressed in our 2DM of tomorrow projects, in addition to research into health and safety, which will continue to be an integral part of the initiative. Is Graphene, the Long-Awaited Wonder Material, Finally Here? Remember "graphene," the wonder material that was supposed to revolutionize tech in the early 2000s? Well, it's back, and it seems the hype might finally be justified. The issue? Producing graphene in a scalable way. But researchers are making breakthroughs, like Professor Sir Colin Humphreys and his team at Queen Mary University of London. They've figured out a way to mass-produce graphene using a technique similar to gallium nitride chipmaking. This is exciting because graphene has the potential to address some of the limitations of silicon, the current king of electronics. Graphene is stronger, more conductive, and uses less energy. That means graphene could be the key to faster processors, longer battery life, and more sustainable tech. Humphreys' company, Paragraf, is already using this new production method to create graphene-based sensors. These sensors can detect things like failing batteries in electric vehicles and distinguish between bacterial and viral infections. The future of graphene looks bright. It may not have lived up to the initial hype cycle, but it seems the wait will be worth it.
