✴️ Breaking News ✴️ BrainsWay today announced that the FDA has granted an expanded indication for Deep TMS™ allowing for the treatment of patients with major depressive disorder ages 22 to 86, changing the previous upper age limit of 68. “Depression does not disappear at age 68, but as we get older, brain atrophy increases the distance from the scalp to the brain which can make it more challenging to reach and treat specific brain targets associated with depression,” stated Colleen Hanlon A. Hanlon, Ph.D., Vice President Medical Affairs. “We believe that the deeper and broader stimulation of Deep TMS plays a meaningful role in overcoming these age-related, anatomical changes, and were able to present compelling clinical data to the FDA demonstrating the efficacy of Deep TMS on these older patients." 🎗World Epilepsy Day is observed annually on February 12th. It's a day dedicated to raising awareness about epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. The goal is to educate people about epilepsy, reduce stigma, and promote understanding and support for those living with the condition. 🌀Epilepsy can develop due to various factors, including genetics, brain injury, infections, or developmental disorders. While it cannot be cured, it can often be managed effectively with medication, lifestyle changes, and sometimes surgery. 🌍According to the World Health Organization (WHO), epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder that affects people of all ages. The WHO's fact sheet on epilepsy includes information on causes, treatment, prevention, signs and symptoms, and more. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, which are sudden, brief changes in the brain's electrical activity. About 70% of people with epilepsy can control their seizures with medication. Most people with epilepsy can become seizure-free by taking one anti-seizure medicine. Others may be able to decrease the number and intensity of their seizures by taking more than one medicine. ▶️Seizures have many different forms and have three stages: 🔹️Prodrome and aura: The beginning of a seizure. 🔹️Ictal: The middle of a seizure. 🔹️Post-ictal: The end of a seizure. #epilepsy #jointoserve #healthcare #health #healthawareness #seizures #worldhealthorganization #who #awarness #jts

TOMORROW! >> Webinar on Dysautonomia with Daniel Yazbeck on the 8th of May, 2024, 8am (Sydney time). Dysautonomia affects millions of people worldwide, yet remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. You can significantly improve the care of these patients with a good understanding of dysautonomia, its various subtypes, and the latest evidence-based approaches to diagnosis and management. Early recognition and appropriate treatment leads to much improved quality of life for these often-overlooked patients. The autonomic nervous system regulates the automatic bodily functions like heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, sweating, etc. Dysautonomia is a dysfunction of some aspect of autonomic function and because people with dysautonomia experience a wide range of symptoms, many receive a delayed diagnoses. These clients are finding their way to your clinic because they have not found someone that understands what’s happening for them and many of their medical tests come back normal yet they feel terrible. Dr Daniel Yazbeck will give you a comprehensive understanding of dysautonomia, its underlying mechanisms, and the latest evidence-based approaches to diagnosis and management. From this presentation you will: - Recognise dysautonomia in many of your patients - Understand the mechanisms of many puzzling, seemingly unrelated symptoms - Have a good understanding of the autonomic nervous system and how it works - Know how to perform a comprehensive clinical examination and which tests and assessments to run to get a clear view of your patient’s autonomic function - Have a practical screening tool for autonomic dysfunction - Understand the main contributors to autonomic disruption - Have a much better understanding POTS coexisting conditions, mast-cell degranulation syndrome, connective tissue disorders, small fibre neuropathy and sleep disorders Register now and upgrade your clinical practice today. https://lnkd.in/grjDvWwA

Functional neurological disorder is not an appropriate diagnosis for people with long Covid | Long Covid — the name adopted for cases of prolonged symptoms after an acute bout of Covid-19 — is an umbrella diagnosis covering a broad range of clinical presentations and abnormal biological processes. Researchers haven’t yet identified a single or defining cause for some of the most debilitating symptoms associated with long Covid, which parallel those routinely seen in other post-acute infection syndromes. These include overwhelming fatigue, post-exertional malaise, cognitive deficits (often referred to as brain fog), and extreme dizziness. [STAT] Given the current gaps in knowledge, some neurologists, psychiatrists, and other clinicians in the United States, United Kingdom, and elsewhere have suggested that an existing diagnosis known as functional neurological disorder (FND) could offer the best explanation for many cases of this devastating illness. #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis #Misdiagnosis - there is no effective treatment or cure…while claims of ‘cures’ due to misdiagnosis, continue to muddy the waters. “ These reports provide clear, formal evidence that almost half of patients referred from primary care with a diagnosis of ME/CFS actually have something else wrong with them The key finding was that 103 (40%) of referrals were eventually diagnosed with other conditions which could explain the concatenation of symptoms. The main alternative diagnoses in these patients were fatigue associated with a chronic disease (47% of all alternative diagnoses); a primary sleep disorder (20%); psychological/psychiatric illnesses (15%, most commonly, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder); and cardiovascular disorders (4%). The second, recently published report examined the prevalence of alternative diagnoses in patients referred by GPs to the specialist clinic at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London (2). Its major finding was that a diagnosis of “CFS” was eventually confirmed in only 54% of patients. Of the rest, 53 patients (21%) were given alternative medical diagnoses (most commonly primary sleep disorders, endocrine disorders, nutritional disorders and pain disorders), while 54 patients (22%) received alternative psychiatric diagnoses (most commonly a depressive illness or anxiety disorder).” https://lnkd.in/e8C42mzr

In addition to Alzheimer's and other dementias, Parkinson's disease is one of the neurological diseases whose prevalence figures are rising and treatment options are urgently needed. The brain stimulation procedure Transcranial Pulse Stimulation (TPS) is showing in ongoing studies and investigations, but also already in daily practice, that this non-invasive method, especially on an outpatient basis, can significantly help patients. In the context of a series of new case reports that will soon be published, the case documented today is exemplary and particularly interesting: a 78-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019, followed by dementia and finally severe depression, received a 6-part initial treatment with transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS) in February 2024. The patient, who had previously been treated with L-dopa, among other things, was barely able to move with a walker before the TPS treatment, suffered from word-finding difficulties and disorientation, was completely helpless in everyday life and severely depressed. This resulted in several long-term stays in psychiatric wards. Her husband, a physicist, came across TPS and quickly understood the physical principles behind the therapy. Today, he and his wife are grateful to have opted for TPS: The patient's depression has since completely vanished, the rollator is history, the tremor has disappeared, she takes the bus into town on her own to go shopping, her orientation and speech have returned. The couple says: "With TPS, we have cheated fate, because we have simply taken advantage of what modern science finally has in store for us and others." This case fits in with the picture that a survey of clinics and practices on TPS for Parkinson's as part of "off-label" therapy had already revealed: TPS is highly effective in around 80 percent of patients, especially those with moderate to severe disease progression: https://lnkd.in/dM32BzvY #alzheimerscience #transcranialpulsestimulation #tps #parkinsons #parkinsonstherapy #brainstimulationparkinsons #parkinsonsdementia #parkinsonsdepression #brainstimulation #noninvasivebrainstimulation #nibs #tpsparkinsons #tpstherapysuccess #tpscasereport
