Last week, we hosted David Turo, Beam Suntory’s CCO. First stop, Wisconsin. The objective was simple: immersion in the market dynamics and premiumization trends. While keeping a growth mindset, we set out to find: -Strategic Consistency: Are our programs aligned to brand goals and expectations? -Identifying Issues: Are there discrepancies with execution account-to-account? If so, why? -Performance optimization: What could we improve, adjust or enhance to increase performance? Real ad or fake, let's put that aside. What I'm attracted to is the concept that "the brand is bigger than the celebrity attached". It takes a long time for a brand to reach this status, and an even longer time for management to be comfortable enough to openly display the thought. But I do agree with commenters here: • If you're not familiar with Beckham's hand tattoo, it doesn't work. • If you haven't seen his other Stella ads, it doesn't work. • If you had no idea that Beckham was Stella's brand ambassador, it doesn't work. For the sake of discussion though, who would you pick and what would be their character defining trait that you would pick if this was your campaign?

Here are 3 things I learned @ Natural Products Expo East in Philly last week: We attended the event to pick up on new trends within the CPG space, check out which brands were making a splash this year, and make better and deeper connections with founders. I learned... 👉🏽 1) Many of these brands really dislike marketing agencies and even freelancers. It seemed like brands were engaging with these 3rd parties at the wrong time, weren't finding the right fit, or weren't keeping their strengths in-house. 👉🏽 2) Packaging and that initial investment into design (and even booth design) REALLY does matter. The booths that looked the most engaging, even with less compelling or differentiated products, had the longest lines. 👉🏽 3) The non-alcoholic beverage space is looking hotter than ever. Of course this expo was dedicated to natural products, but I saw a lot of interest towards brands that were feeding into a less extreme, better living lifestyle which centered around values like less alcohol intake, slower living, and what TikTok is calling a "soft life" (but that's still up for debate.) Had the opportunity to meet Mr. Srinivas Kamath, the man behind the exceptional growth of Naturals as we know it. While the 165 retail store presence sounds exciting, the tact behind getting to the number is even better. From all the insights he shared, what stuck with me most was their strategy of making the Paw Bhaji they offered in their first retail store spicier than what people are used to. This got people to buy their ice creams and helped them in creating a market for Natural ice cream. Strong brands are: Meaningful = fulfill people's needs, Different = differenciate from other brands, and Salient = are top of mind when it comes to purchase decision. Here an example of a brand investing into its saliency, i.e. becoming more top of mind):
Sunday night saw another brand using the Super Bowl for the first time to promote itself to US audiences. The humorous ad featured actor Michael Cera, famous for Arrested Development, Scott Pilgrim and last year’s blockbuster Barbie, claiming to have invented CeraVe – only to have a room of dermatologists reassert the brand’s true scientific credentials. So why did CeraVe invest millions into one big event? As Kantar BrandSnapshot data reveals, because this is a brand that is liked by consumers: it’s highly Meaningful – but not enough of them know it. Its Salient index of 94 is below average. Brands in this position need more prominence and fame and attention from consumers – exactly what the Super Bowl campaign and its associated social media activation can deliver for CeraVe.
