Embracing ESG: A Personal Journey of Sustainability
#Week3: Sustainable Living
When the first wave of COVID-19 hit, many of us suddenly had more time on our hands. Medical experts were emphasizing the importance of boosting immunity and reducing reliance on external sources. Seeking survival, solace, and purpose, I returned to my hometown during the lockdown.
On our farm, there was a barren piece of land that had remained unused for years. I saw this as an opportunity to improve my health and make the most of the situation by transforming that land into something fruitful. Each morning and evening, I worked the soil, and before long, that neglected plot blossomed into a thriving vegetable garden.
Fast forward five years, and what was once barren land now provides a steady supply of fresh, nutritious vegetables. Each harvest is not just a step towards self-sufficiency but also a small yet meaningful victory for our planet. By growing our own produce, we've significantly reduced our use of plastic bags—no more plastic-wrapped groceries from the market.
This journey has been about more than just changing our diet. It’s about reconnecting with nature and fostering a deeper connection to the land. Embracing sustainable living is a tangible expression of our commitment to ESG principles, proving that even small actions can contribute to a healthier planet.
What’s even more inspiring is seeing how this movement has spread among my friends. Some are cultivating their own vegetables on rooftop gardens, while others have started with just a single pot of coriander—enough to meet their family’s needs. It’s a beautiful reminder that no space is too small to make a difference. When you grow your own food, the waste is minimal, and the sense of belonging and connection to your efforts is immeasurable.
P.S. If you grow bottle gourds yourself, you’ll discover how delightful they are in your meals every day. Trust me, there’s something truly special about cultivating, harvesting, and preparing your own food.
I look forward to exploring more about ESG with you all in the coming weeks!
