Gig economy is huge! An estimated 1/3 of the population has a gig or side freelance job. Yet I still see employers refuse to hire someone who has a gig. 🤔 Why are we judging people and refusing to hire people who hustle? Having a gig or doing freelance work says a lot about a potential employee. What's that, you might ask? Well, let's see... 1) Diverse skill set 2) Networking abilities 3) Entrepreneurial spirit! (Hint - this one is big) 4) Self-motivation *To name just a few Are these not the same exact characteristics that employers value? We all want self-motivated employees who bring a diverse skill set and networking abilities with a spirit of entrepreneurial prowess. So why are you not grabbing these people? I need to hear one good reason.

What is Gig Economy? Does it have a future? Google defines Gig Economy as "a labour market characterized by the prevalence of short-term contracts or freelance work as opposed to permanent jobs." Facilitated by digital platforms or online marketplaces, individuals, often referred to as "gig workers", "freelancers" or "independent contractors," engage in temporary, on-demand, or freelance work rather than traditional full-time employment- thus constituting the Gig Economy. Gig economy jobs can span various industries, including transportation (ridesharing drivers), accommodation (short-term rentals), freelance writing, graphic design, etc. The rise of digital platforms and mobile apps has played a significant role in connecting gig workers with potential clients or customers, offering them flexibility and diversity throughout. The surging numbers tell the story. A major hiring shift is transforming how businesses find and utilize talent and how that talent finds and establishes relationships with companies that need its skills. Outsourcing work to freelancers is by no means a new phenomenon, but as the figures indicate, in the past five years it has jumped to an entirely new level.

helping leverage human behaviour to build an inclusive world I Care Advocate I DEI Strategist I Behaviour Change Advisor I Researcher I Entrepreneur 📣 Views expressed are my own. I wear courage & laughter on my sleeve.
Shattering the Gig-worker / freelancer myth with my very Hindi Uff! I had to write about this today so please bear with me. There's a misconception in some organizations that gig workers are simply employees on a career break seeking short-term stints and ultimate liberation from the shackles of full-time work. This view is surprisingly prevalent among both men and women in full-time traditional roles including human resources/ people function that therefore overlooks the realities and motivations of a diverse and rapidly growing workforce segment. Gig workers are not a monolith, it is a mosaic. They come from all walks of life, with varied reasons for choosing this path. 1️⃣ Some are highly skilled professionals seeking project-based flexibility to manage other commitments, hone specific skills, or pursue entrepreneurial ventures. For example, my cross-sectoral/functional abilities, my ability to connect dots across disparate themes come from my conscious effort to take up work in multiple streams to keep learning. I love gigs, because it allows me to grow my knowledge base, pick up new skills, leverage my skills on a project-by-project basis rather than spend time on administrative workout. 2️⃣ It gives gig-workers a sense of autonomy and control over my work. And this autonomy isn't about shirking responsibility; it's about tailoring one’s work to their own specific needs and goals. 3️⃣ And of course, in a favourable market condition, one can make twice the money in gigs versus full-time roles, and in half that time while saving tax. 4️⃣ And unlike what is required in a full-time job, a gig worker’s networks may run deeper and wider depending on their motivation and interest. 5️⃣ For others, gig working could be entry points or supplementing their income. Now, dismissing the freelancers/gig-workers as "on a break" is a #disservice to their expertise and ambitions. Here what you should know especially if you are in human resources or business: 🔔 The gig economy offers a valuable alternative, not just an escape when an org runs of budget for FT positions. To be able to fully reap its benefits, dismantle the bias that misrepresents gig workers in your head. Gig workers often represent diverse backgrounds and skillsets not readily found in traditional hiring pools. 🔔Perpetuating the stereotype that gig workers are just men or women seeking temporary solutions due to caregiving responsibilities is #harmful and #exclusionary. While this may be true for some, it's far from the full story. Perpetuating this bias can actually limit opportunities for women in full-time roles. The gig economy is here to stay and so is the fluidity between gigs/freelancing and traditional FT roles, and it's time we move beyond outdated assumptions. #DEI #diversity #womenonbreak #careerbreak #returnship #inclusion #gigworkers #freelancer #gig
