It's disheartening to see Tua still wants to play this season. I feel for the 26 year old yound man. I was glad to see him placed on the IR. He's still consulting neurologists and says he "feels fine," but the risks are undeniable. The recent news about Brett Favre's Parkinson’s diagnosis, which he links to his NFL concussions, intensifies my worries. This aligns with research indicating that a third of former NFL players suspect chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)—a severe degenerative condition from repeated head impacts. With Tua's $212 million contract, which is fully guaranteed at $93 million, he must reconsider. His identity spans beyond just being an NFL player.

I am far from self-made. This day was a stark reminder. Several men rallied to support the aspirations of young Black males. You should have seen their faces. Reminder: My growth and development have been shaped by many. Big thanks to Curtis Wright for the opportunity, to share the stage with my mentor Gabe Willis, Ph.D, and Ronald Carrere.

Fantastic turnout at the UAB College of Arts and Sciences career fair! It’s always a joy to see students networking and exploring career possibilities. Question: If your son suffered 3 concussions in 24 months, what would advise? Tua Tagovailoa suffered a third concussion while playing against the Buffalo Bills this week. It’s a heart-wrenching moment for him, and undoubtedly, a critical inflection point in his life. Reflecting on what’s best for his long-term health is crucial. While some suggest retirement, the essential thing is that Tua takes the time he needs to consider his next steps carefully. His identity extends far beyond the NFL quarterback role. He’s a successful young man who has made significant impacts on and off the field. I hope he recognizes the breadth and depth of his influence beyond the game. Concussions are serious, and seeing a young athlete face such challenges is distressing. As he contemplates his future, it’s vital for him to make decisions that prioritize his well-being. Decisions about retirement, career changes, or ending professional relationships are never easy. I hope he gets it right.

Thanks to Mary Blanchard Wallace, PhD & Jennifer Griffin for co-chairing the Welcome Back Concert! The effort they put in was truly outstanding, and it showed. We saw smiles all around—staff and students alike enjoying the moment. This event kicked off our semester and highlighted the strong community we’re building here. Thanks for making such a significant event happen; it’s clear everyone appreciates the hard work and care you bring to our student success efforts. In case you can't tell, we are all tired, but smiling! It’s the Blazer Way!
