Meet The Team! Clay Cagle, Grading Crew Foreman. Q: How long have you been working for Thompson Arthur, and how long have you been working in construction? 🦺 29 years at Thompson Arthur, and I've been working in construction since I was 13 years old. Q: What do you like most about working at Thompson Arthur? 🦺 There are a lot of good people here. And the paycheck keeps the lights on. Q: What are some of the toughest challenges you've had at work? 🦺 On large jobsites, such as the one I am currently working on, it is sometimes difficult to be and stay productive with literally thousands of other workers on the jobsite. All while maintaining the specific requirements set by the customer. Q: What do you feel is a priority for our company? 🦺 Safety is number one, but after that we are focused on quality, experienced employees. Q: What is the best advice you could give a new hire at our company? 🦺 Have and keep a good attitude, put safety first, and be humble enough to take advantage of the opportunity you have been given to learn from the experienced employees around you and you will go far. Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be? 🦺 The ability to heal sick kids (cancer, etc.). Q: What is your favorite food? 🦺 Country fried steak with gravy and mashed potatoes. Q: Do you have any nicknames? 🦺 Green thumb because I like to grow a garden. Q: If you could have an unlimited supply of anything, what would it be? 🦺 Money so that I could help homeless veterans. Q: Describe yourself in 3 words. 🦺 Kind, respectful, and responsible. Q: What is the worst job you have ever had? 🦺 I worked for a cotton mill. My job was tying knots in the threads that broke. That lasted 3 days. #ThompsonArthur #CRH #SafetyFirst #BuildAmerica #NorthCarolina #Construction #ConstructionLife #Jobs #NowHiring #Safety #Career #Employee #JobOpportunity #Career #DirtWork #Building #Bridge #Structure #Bridgework #BridgeConstruction #infrastructure #Roads #Paving #Striping #Equipment

This week, May 6th - 10th, is #ConstructionSafetyWeek. It is an opportunity for the industry to come together and commit to safe efforts on site, so every person gets home safely each day. At Monteith, we proudly commit to site safety and acknowledge its importance on every jobsite. The theme for the first day of Construction Safety Week is 'Driving Personal Ownership.' Personal ownership means accepting a greater level of responsibility for our own safety, as well as the safety of others. "When it comes to safety, whether it's an unsafe condition or behavior, if you see it, you own it; if you walk by it, you condone it." (Construction Safety Week). This is a great reminder of what happens daily in the construction industry. As leaders we need to ask correct questions and observe the work. As leaders our responsibility is to remove hurdles not create more hurdles for construction crews.
For four hours yesterday evening, me and a small group of guys helped an organization that we belong to, remove (jackhammer and sledge hammers) and replace 80 year old concrete that was 6” - 8” thick. My role on the crew was a laborer. Our leadership gave us a saw with a dull blade, about half the tools that we needed, and about 80% of the materials that we needed to complete the project. After several delays and three trips to Home Depot we are still not done. Now I really understand what the field is up against. This happens thousands of times a day in the construction industry and we wonder why it’s hard to attract people in our industry. I have a lot of pride, so I will be back there to complete the project, but I’m guessing there will be several guys on the crew that don’t show up again.

Like I do every March, over the last few days I’ve been thinking of my friend David. Seven years ago on a Thursday in March my friend David was killed in a trench collapse. It was what I consider a perfect storm of poor safety conditions. It was late in the afternoon, they were working 4-10s and the guys were ready to go home. It was drizzly out and so the ground was muddy and stuck to your boots. The safety equipment necessary to enter the trench was on site, but on the other side of the site, and consequently wasn’t being used. The crew just needed to finish one more little thing and they could go home for the weekend, it would only take a minute. The sitedrain fabric they were unrolling in the ditch got folded up and they couldn’t spread the gravel on it. So, David did what many of us have done before, he decided that he would go down into the ditch and take care of it. In true leader fashion, never asking someone to do something he was unwilling to do himself, he walked down to where they had already backfilled the trench and ran the 40 or so feet back to where the fabric was. It would only take a minute. While he was working in the unprotected trench, it collapsed, instantly burying him under several tons of wet soil. I think about David often. He’s my constant companion as I walk through job sites and he’s in the back of my head when I make safety plans for sites that I run. I can’t explain how much that day impacted me in my professional career. Whenever I’m tempted to take a shortcut, I stop and think of my friend. We're all tempted sometimes to take a risk because it will only be a minute. I'm here to tell you that sometimes, that's all it takes. Work safe out there today. Do it for David. #construction #constructionsafety #safety #safetyculture

Balance The Great Lakes Roofing employee experience is one of balance. Hard work : Down time Sense of urgency : Patience Lots of ratios are kept in balance from day-to-day and season-to-season. Another enjoyable balance is consistency and predictability on jobsites. For instance, if you work the crane, then you'll likely be working the crane at this jobsite and the next jobsite too. But, also, if you work the crane, you'll get to visit a different jobsite for a different task every day. Consistency : Flexibility When you're on the Material Handling Crew, you may be a driver and you may be the rooftop picker. You may help rig loads of materials onto the flatbeds and get to know all of our Foremen, serving customers across the Midwest. What's that saying...the only constant is change...And those who excel at adapting will be the Crew that rises above the rest. Here, you're a part of something Great! #values #4Pillars #balance #employeeexperience #commercialroofing #local #Midwest

Not all of our jobs are as straightforward as we’d like, and occasionally an unforeseen situation could derail an entire series of work. A few weeks ago, one of our Tradespeople arrived at a customers’ house to lay new floorboards. Upon attending, he realised he’d been given the wrong size boards and couldn’t do the job as planned. This was part of a two-step job and had to be done that day so that the second part could take place as planned. Rather than cancel or postpone, Dave worked out a solution with the equipment and boards he did have and then stayed until the work was fully completed. As a result, the customer was able to successfully have the whole job completed on time. It’s Tradespeople like Dave who really make a difference in our business; seeing our customers’ needs and using their expertise to solve problems rather than cause delays. Dave’s supervisor passed on these thoughts on his work and work ethic: #StokeOnTrent #Staffordshire #Construction #Building #Repairs #Maintenance #Teamwork #Professionalism #skills

In most high rise domestic and office buildings a fixed firefight installation is installed during the build. But after a technical lifetime of 20 years these installations need to be exchanged in order to meet safety regulations. Unlike during the construction of these buildings, the properties are now in use with offices or even occupied with habitants. Needless to say that during the work on the firefight installation a temporary firefight solution is demanded by local firefight departments. In the first few months of ’24 we performed several temporary firefight installations so that our customer could safely change out the existing system for a new setup. At #rentalpumps we deliver fire fight solutions all year round to several (chemical) industries, shipyards and in this case utility constructions. Many of our customers rely on the quality and ingenuity of our team to come up with a solid solution tailored to your specific needs. #rentalpumpsgroup #fifi #temporarypumps https://lnkd.in/eRWppBsJ
