We collaborate with Industrial Design course at Universitas Pembangunan Jaya, to develop several apparel concept, using a Mimo themed branding and design. With this activities, we also engage with young people, that in reality, will be the user of Mimo products and services in the future. While based in SE Asia, one aspect of marketing I adored was writing blogs for Nestify, my online furniture boutique. Now I'm at Sweet Lime Furnishings in the Virgin Islands helping them transition from brick-and-mortar to omni channel, both literally and figuratively. (Our smaller showroom dates back to 1778 and has survived two-and-a-half centuries of hurricanes, showing the strength of the original limestone and brick construction, and the skill of the builders.) Working in the furniture industry has been, without a doubt, the gateway to developing my passion and appreciation for history. It awoke me to the richness of life, that everything is connected. My first blog in this document is about the city of Jepara, (Central Java, Indonesia) where most of our teak and mahogany furniture is from, and the town's brilliant young feminist, Kartini, who lived a short life but left a powerful imprint. Sometimes it is undeniable that people start a business based on the need to survive. Therefore, many people have a design background, choosing to do business instead of working in an agency or company. The question is, does good design taste affect the development of a business in general? In this episode, we have Tangguh Alexander the Founder of a luxury leather shoe brand that has been around for more than 10 years from Indonesia, Junkard Co. I met Tangguh by accident. Back in 2012, I was looking for a local leather boots product and that's when I first bought Junkard Co. Because honestly at that time I couldn't afford boots like Red Wing or Dr. Martens. Since then I have been inspired to create my shoe brand. After a few months of research and looking for a production vendor, I found a vendor from Bandung. My partner and I went there, and it turned out that the workshop was Junkard's production site and I met Tangguh in person there. Long story short after getting acquainted, I found out that he has a basic design degree like me. Since then, I have continued to buy Junkard products, even my wedding shoes are special custom shoes that I ordered from Tangguh 😁 Tangguh will share his story of starting a business, the role of design taste and knowledge in developing a product, and what he thinks is the biggest gap between creativity and business goals. Allow me to briefly recap my final project during my college years. "In this project, I designed a popular terminal from 1992, where the terminal was notably busy. What makes the TERMINAL BLOK M unique is the presence of the first underground mall in Jakarta, which was highly esteemed by the community at that time. Both the TERMINAL BLOK M and MALL were hangout spots for young people, offering various amenities such as fashion, culinary options, and more. However, over time, the BLOK M area has gradually lost its popularity, compounded by the neglect of the terminal area. In response, I created a new typology for the TERMINAL BLOK M, aiming not only to serve as a transportation hub for passengers but also to develop an architectural facility with multiple functions in one building. These functions include retail, co-working space, roof garden, and sports areas. All these functions are intended to reinforce the terminal's role, not just as a transit hub but also as a meeting place for people (a point of convergence)."
