Founder of Momentus Legal | Outsourced General Counsel for Growing Companies | Commercial and Business Law Attorney | Denver & Aspen, CO📍
42 Years of Reflection: It’s so easy to overlook our own achievements in the daily grind. Today, I’m taking a moment to recognize and appreciate the accomplishments with gratitude. As I celebrated my 42nd birthday earlier this week, I found myself reflecting on the journey that has brought me to this point. Birthdays often prompt this sort of reflection for me. Four years ago, I was wrapping up the final steps to go solo and open my own law firm. That decision, to step out on my own, was one of the most challenging and rewarding of my career. Little did I know that it was just the beginning of a journey that would take me in directions I hadn’t imagined. Around the same time, I completed my first marathon and then shortly after, made the move to the mountains, a place that has always felt like home to me. I split my time between here and Denver, finding a balance that allows me to immerse myself in the natural beauty that I love while still growing my practice. As I settled into this new life, I began to envision something even bigger: the creation of Momentus Legal. What started as an idea has now become a reality, and with it, a fantastic team that shares a vision for what legal practice can be. We’ve made great strides, and I know we’re just getting started. I share this not just to mark the occasion but to acknowledge the power of reflection and gratitude. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget just how far we’ve come. But I took a moment earlier this week to appreciate it all—the challenges, the successes, the growth. I’m excited for what’s ahead, and I’m grateful for everyone who has been a part of this journey. If you’re reading this, I hope it encourages you to take a moment for your own reflection, to recognize the milestones in your life, and to feel gratitude for the journey you’re on. Here’s to the next chapter—both yours and mine! #Gratitude #Reflection #Milestones #Growth #LegalCommunity #Entrepreneur #Journey #intentionalliving #lawyer #attorney #momentuslegal

Alexander Graham Bell once said, "When one door closes, another door opens." Most people don't know the rest of the quote, though, which is even more significant: "But we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us." Let's face it: we become attached to the status quo. It's familiar and comfortable, even if parts of it are harmful. We hang on to it, no matter what. I have done that many times. I spent several years being unhappy in my old job before leaving to start my own law firm. I kept imagining all kinds of worst-case scenarios, including how my family would be suffer financially and how I would never be able to get another job. Why do we cling to bad realities? Because we think that it's better to stare at a closed door, even one that is stressful and unfulfilling, than to experience the anxiety of opening a new door shrouded in mystery. We imagine monsters behind the new door. My law firm is coming up on its 7th year business anniversary this week, and I've never been happier. Yes, the first year was a complete blur, and at first, I wasn't sure that I would succeed. But it wasn't very long before I did. This experience has taught me to be more flexible, to learn to reorient my mindset to focus on possibilities, even in the midst of hardship. And to stop being fixated on the door that closes.
