More building in Coney Island

Over the last four years we have assembled seven historic properties on the corner of Shandwick Place and Queensferry Street and, with our JV partner Souter Investments, aim to breathe new life into this corner of Edinburgh’s West End and ensure a sustainable, long term future for these buildings. Not only will our development of this prominent site build on the success of the Johnnie Walker Experience in regenerating this part of the city centre, but we anticipate the construction, refurbishment and subsequent operational activities of the project to create significant GVA and jobs. The buildings themselves have suffered from chronic underinvestment over recent years with many different uses creating damage to the building fabric and a disjointed interior footprint. The amalgamation of this site presents a unique opportunity to provide these important buildings with a modern future, while redeploying much of the existing fabric and materials. Crucial to the viability of the project is the reconciliation of the interior into one, interconnected space to support a modern, operationally net-zero hotel.

Castlegate and Harmony Works are where Sheffield began: the meeting of the Don and the Sheaf. These two projects are, in no small part, the result of a decade-long collaboration between the The University of Sheffield and Sheffield City Council to turn the city’s ancient past into a reimagined future. In particular its schools of Architecture and Music alongside the indefatigable Professa Vanessa. That it will become a reality in 2025 — just a year away — seems almost more difficult to imagine. What should not be forgotten, however, is that none of these schemes would have been possible without a Conservative Government under Boris Johnson putting billions behind his levelling up and the high street rejuvenation agendas. Much derided by our intellectual elite, these two policies are helping reshape, largely for the better, the heart and soul of our once vibrant cities. Universities and councils who are the beneficiaries of these policies should be sufficiently generous to acknowledge it in all their public and private communications. When the EU funded such schemes back in the with recycled UK taxes, recipients of ERDF had to agree to give full prominence to this. Castlegate and Harmony Hill, much as it may pain some to say it, is one of Boris Johnson’s lasting legacies.
