Yikes - here I am - Take 3 😅 An amazing day yesterday at our first heat decarbonisation brokerage event bringing together the Scottish Borders Council, RSLs, enterprising communities, large private estates and the public sector alongside companies and organisations that can provide technical and place-based solutions. Some of which are based in the South of Scotland too. Every talk was excellent and inspiring - such a buzz in the room. And plenty of networking too - role on our second event in Dumfries later this year. My take home reflections - if any of this is of interest to you, get in touch! 1. It's good to talk. National events are fantastic, but having something at a local level to complement this allows for deeper conversations to emerge. 2. The clean heat transition is a journey - and as many speakers demonstrated today - there are so many cost effective, low carbon measures that can be adopted now. 3. The clean heat transition is a journey (part 2) - remember your training Paul! Clean heat and renewables are great, but do not leapfrog the demand management and energy efficiency measures first off! 4. Could community halls act as a central pillar to unlock the clean heat transition in rural areas? Early adopters; showcasing what can be done; land available for shared ground arrays etc. The case was made yesterday... 5. Think holistically when considering the transition. Rural areas have an opportunity here - linking agri-waste, AD, methane/H2 for farm machinery, solar arrays, GSHP shared ground arrays, returning digestate to the land to offset fossil NH3, close-working cooperatives, land and so on. 6. District does not have to be city, urban dense heat networks - revisit the definition in the Heat Networks Act! We are awash with shared ground loop heat networks under our nose in our region, and there are demonstrators and pilots in progress. SOSE are keen to get these on the map to act as case studies for others... South of Scotland Enterprise; Paul Wheelhouse; Kevin Dickson; Martin Valenti
