Her suggestions—like refining application stages and providing clearer guidance—highlight how collaboration can benefit everyone in the sector. From my perspective as a Major Donor Manager, these improvements are crucial. When charities and funders work together more efficiently, we can confidently direct funding to projects that resonate with our donor community. Streamlined processes make identifying initiatives with real potential easier, ensuring that major donors’ contributions have a lasting impact where they’re needed most. Just wrapped up an incredible session at #IFC2024 led by Rebecca Davies from CARE and Oliver Gell from Save the Children! The focus was on the power of unrestricted giving and how we, as fundraisers, need to rethink our approach to these invaluable gifts. Some key takeaways: • Unrestricted funds as activism: These gifts allow us to make a real, long-term impact and respond flexibly to the world’s most pressing needs. • Mindset shift: We need to check our own biases and embrace the importance of unrestricted donations, not see them as a “black hole.” • Role-playing: Just like pilots or surgeons, fundraisers need to practice asking for unrestricted donations—this builds confidence and comfort in making the ask. • Reframing the ask: Unrestricted gifts aren’t just about what they aren’t (restricted), they’re about empowerment, activism, and real change! This session gave me so much to think about and practical tools to bring back to my own work.
