𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 A recently published article, titled ‘Health Care Utilisation and Unmet Needs in Survivors of Head and Neck Cancer in Regional Australia: A Cross-Sectional Survey’, aims to investigate unmet needs and healthcare utilisation of survivors of head and neck cancer in regional areas.   This latest research highlights that nearly two-thirds of rural survivors of head and neck cancer report unmet needs, including fear of recurrence, care coordination, and limited access to allied health and local services. Frequent GP visits highlight accessibility of primary care facilities, but financial and travel burdens limit access to specialist care. Urgent investment in multidisciplinary, localised care is essential to address these gaps and support rural survivors beyond treatment. But today’s report from Lord Darzi emphasises the sobering reality that the UK lags significantly behind other countries in cancer care and outcomes, and lays bare the challenges the NHS faces. In response, the Health Secretary has suggested three ‘big shifts’ which outline commitment to preventive and community-based care, as well as digital innovation at scale. Empowering patients to take control of their treatment and care will help to increase the productivity of the NHS’ brilliant but overstretched workforce. Gauteng is facing a severe cancer treatment crisis, and Premier Panyaza Lesufi's proposal for mediation only adds unnecessary delays. Direct communication between the Gauteng Health Department and interest groups is urgently needed to cut the treatment backlogs that are costing lives. The department must act swiftly, using the R784 million budget effectively to provide timely care to cancer patients. The DA calls for a public/private partnership that integrates all interest groups to ensure that no more lives are lost due to bureaucratic failures. Unlocking access to essential diagnostics, Axios International empowers patients worldwide through comprehensive educational campaigns and targeted outreach efforts.
