In our quests for success, reducing negative thinking is more effective than increasing positive thinking.
Work to eliminate the 5 C’s:
— Complaining
— Criticizing
— Concern (worry)
— Commiserating

👋 Hello! I've been mostly offline since last week and I’m back...with a potentially controversial opinion.
I saw a clip of Will Smith (with Martin Lawrence while promoting the new Bad Boys film) and it has been replaying in my head. It spoke deeply to me. Excellence is a habit, but it’s an all-consuming habit. As Fisayo Longe puts it, it requires a "beastmode-level of dedication that can take a lifetime."
However, in my experience, it’s not practical to expect to be excellent in everything, all the time. Working in-house is a team sport, even when you are solo counsel. It requires a system, input, and support from numerous stakeholders working collaboratively. For excellence to be achieved consistently, the entire organization and teams must share it as a core value. Trying to push others towards excellence daily when it’s not a shared value isn’t just exhausting; it’s probably futile.
The key skill then to master is discernment: knowing what truly requires excellence so it can be prioritized.
Do you agree? How do you balance the drive for excellence with practical limitations?
By the way, have you seen the movie yet?

Listen to Walter and I discuss the importance of mentoring and collaborating
with multiple generations to help us grow individually and create awareness of important lessons of the past.
Having a little faith with me was a lesson I learned from my first mentor, Al.
Al approached me one day, and said, "Bob, can I share a thought with you for a few minutes?"
He had always been someone to help, especially for me as a new guy in an old company.
But this conversation was different, because I didn't ask for his help.
I was experiencing a growing opposition to my efforts to organize the collective wisdom within our company to serve clients in a more valuable way for them, and a more efficient way for us.
Funny how people sometimes focus so much on reinforcing their butt in their chair, they miss an opportunity that is practically on the floor next to their desk.
So Al and I stepped into a conference room, and he invited me to join him in working with one of the company's key clients.
It was a selfless act, and a strategic one, to combine our strengths for the benefit of our company's growth.
Rather than working on this transformation with new clients, a new process, and a new guy in the company, Al connected the whole effort to an existing client with sophistication and integrity.
And he reinforced my faith in what's possible for all of us.
It's amazing what we can accomplish when we share the credit.

Did you know that today is actually Daniel Bernoulli's birthday? The man that discovered Bernoulli's principle?
And while Bernoulli's principle plays an important role in hydraulics and design videos like this can make it just a little bit easier to explain what we do to our mini humans.
Why not share this with your little ones today and help teach them not only about Bernoulli but also the world that you belong to!

Reflecting on core values is essential. I guided a session where participants chose values important to them and discussed actions to pursue these values.
Live your life intentionally.
"You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending." - C.S. Lewis
Understanding and pursuing our values shapes our future.
