From key stage one right up to college aged students, aviation volunteers never fail to make an impact on the young people that meet them. Whether it’s pilots who are recognised by their uniform, or people working behind the scenes in jobs that pupils have never heard of before, we see students' imaginations captured every time! Aviation volunteers demonstrate to young people that there are jobs for every skillset, every personality and every passion in their industry. Board Member Spotlight! This week we are featuring Alex Heiter, Director of Air Service Development at Tampa International Airport (TPA). Where do you live? I live in Pasco County, about 30-minutes north of TPA What is your current role and does it involve aviation? I serve as the Director of Air Service Development – a role that involves close collaboration with our airline partners to bring new non-stop flights and routes to TPA. Favorite aircraft. Boeing 757-200 Favorite destination: Anywhere I can fly nonstop from TPA! Do you have your pilot's license? No, just ground school in college Do you prefer window or aisle seat? Window, always! What is something on your bucket list? I still have a handful of countries to visit on my bucket list What is your favorite memory from a TJDAS event? My first gala dinner where I had the chance to meet Brad Tilden of Alaska Airlines. Turns out his dad had worked at a Boeing facility down the street from my old house. Why did you join TJDAS? TPA has a close relationship with the Society, and I wanted to help keep those ties strong. What piece of advice would you give to high school or college students interested in aviation? First of all, try to find a mentor who has some connections in the industry. Secondly, don’t give up on the dream – it can be a tough industry to get into, but don’t give up on the dream, it will pay off over time! Any other information you’d like to add: I’ve flown over 2.5 million miles for business and pleasure, visiting close to 70 countries. My favorite aviation moment was meeting Neil Armstrong when I was in college.

The Aeroguard Flight Training Center predicts that...In the current estimate for 2024-2042, the years to come will require 649,000 new pilots worldwide with nearly 130,000 of these new pilots in North America. Even with airlines hiring thousands of pilots every year, the industry is still expected to be short 30,000 pilots in 2032. The Importance of Caring Deeply and Effective Communication One of Magellan Jets' core values is caring deeply. Shortly after I started, Anthony Tivnan one of our Founders and President gave me some invaluable advice: "Remember, we are dealing with two things that are not perfect...People and Planes. There will be mistakes and mechanical issues that will cause delays or cancellations of flights. Your success or failure in this business will be based on how you communicate and handle these situations." Last week, I received a call from a family looking to leave Nantucket on a private jet after being fogged in on Sunday. After booking their trip, I decided it would be a good idea to take the ferry to the island first thing in the morning to see them off on their first flight with Magellan Jets. However, things didn't go as planned. The first jet had an issue and had to be grounded. By the time I arrived on the island, the second option also had a mechanical issue, and we were now searching for our third option. Despite these setbacks, I kept the family updated regularly and worked tirelessly to find a solution. Before heading back on the ferry, the client looked at me and said, "The fact that you took the time to come over to the island, kept us updated regularly, and worked so hard on our behalf...we will never fly with anyone else." Receiving this feedback in their post-flight survey (pictured below) was incredibly rewarding. This is a perfect score! This experience reaffirmed the importance of both caring deeply and effective communication, especially in challenging situations. It's not just about providing a service; it's about showing our clients that we genuinely care about their experience and are committed to making it the best it can be. Of course this cannot be accomplished without the rest of the Magellan Jets team supporting me.
