We visited Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic, the hometown of Škoda, as part of our study tour. It's a small town—our Pune railway station is 20-25 times bigger than theirs! Our professor warmly welcomed us on our arrival, and the discussions quickly began. One of the first questions was about which automobile manufacturers we had chosen to study for their contributions to sustainability. Surprisingly, none of us had selected Tata Motors. Our professor quickly picked up on this and began talking about Tata and the immense philanthropic work they do. The discussion then shifted to how Tata has not only taken over iconic brands like Jaguar and Range Rover but also set unmatched standards in social sustainability—something that no other car manufacturer can even come close to achieving. This sparked a thought: How can Tata run such a profitable business while contributing so much to society? It's a question worth studying, and at the Škoda Academy, they teach European students about it. That evening, during a city walk, I found a spot with a view of the entire Škoda plant and the town. I sat down and thought: Are we teaching our people about leaders like this? Are we truly learning from them? At that moment, I had a strong urge to meet Ratan Tata and simply say, “Thank you.” His contributions are beyond comprehension, and they remind us how invaluable his legacy is. At Tata Motors, I had an opportunity to visit Maruti Transport Logistics as part of a project aimed at understanding and addressing challenges in their fleet. I was able to understand the industry dynamics with this experience. 1️⃣ MIL Issues in 6 Cylinder Engines: Engaging with Maruti Transport Logistics, we proactively sought feedback regarding issues faced with 6-cylinder engines. 2️⃣ No Significant Issues Reported: It was heartening to learn that there were no major issues reported by Maruti Transport Logistics. This reaffirms our commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles that meet industry standards. 3️⃣ Tata Fleet Dominance: The feedback highlighted the prevalent use of Tata Fleet vehicles, showcasing the trust and reliance on Tata Motors' offerings in the logistics sector. 4️⃣ Nationwide Car Trailers: Discovering that Maruti Transport Logistics predominantly utilizes All India Car Trailers emphasizes the widespread reach and usage of transportation solutions across the country. This insight contributes to our understanding of market trends and demands. 5️⃣ MIL in 4 Cylinder Engines:  Interestingly, feedback suggested that MIL in 4-cylinder engines faced more than four issues. MBA Case study 1 - When Ford Motor Company practically sold live bombs in its cars, despite being fully aware of it   It was 1960’s and the American market was flooded with cheap and compact Japanese cars. In 1968, Ford motors rolled up its sleeves and started working to launch its own sub compact car ‘Pinto’. Ford fast tracked Pinto’s development, but the final version of Pinto had a major flaw in it.   The regulations at that time required cars to withstand any rear collision of upto 20 miles/hr. While Pinto could withstand collisions upto 20 miles/hr, anything more than that would result in a serious fire hazard and potential death of its occupants.   Ford was in a dilemma whether it should correct this design blunder or go with the current product (despite it being risky to human life, but in compliance with regulations).   Now Ford solved this using a cost benefit analysis valuing life of people died in dollars and comparing it to the cost of correcting the car design.   Basis its calculations, cost of correcting design landed at USD138mn vs mere USD50mn as value for loss of human life. (Check attachment for the calculations)   Ford actually launched the car despite being fully aware of its malfunctions and danger basis its cost benefit analysis.   Between 1971 and 1978, as per Ford/Critics, 23/500+ people died because of this malfunction. The ethical question arises: can a monetary value be assigned to human life, and did Ford have the right to prioritize cost over safety in this situation? What are your views?
