As you gear up for your interview, focus on showcasing yourself in the best possible light. Here are four ways to make a great impression in an interview, as highlighted in an article by Prospects: ❇ Be Punctual: Arriving late can spike your stress and give a poor first impression. Aim to be on time and relaxed. ❇ Stay Positive and Enthusiastic: Treat everyone you meet politely and professionally. If you're nervous, remember that the worst outcome is not getting the job. During the interview, be positive, show enthusiasm for the role, and avoid speaking negatively about past employers or educators. ❇ Use Effective Body Language: Start and end with a firm handshake. Sit naturally, avoid slouching, and don't lean on the desk. Smile often and maintain eye contact to convey confidence and engagement. ❇ Communicate Clearly: Provide clear, concise answers that highlight your relevant skills, experiences, and achievements. It's okay to take a moment to think or ask for clarification on a tough question. Speak at a moderate pace to ensure your answers are understood. Q1: What's the best way to prepare for a job interview? A1: Preparation is key to a successful interview. Start by thoroughly researching the company—understand its mission, values, and recent achievements. Review the job description and identify how your skills and experiences align with the role. Practice storytelling and matching your experiences to the job responsibilities. Q2: How should I dress for an interview? A2: Try to do some research on the company's culture if you can. Although many workplaces have become more casual in recent years, some corporate roles may expect business attire like suits. Business casual attire like a button-down shirt and slacks, dresses, or a blouse and skirt might be suitable in many settings, including on Zoom or video interviews. Ensure your clothes are clean, pressed, and fit well. Q3: What should I bring to the interview? A3: If interviewing in person bring multiple copies of your resume, a notepad, and a pen. If the interview involves a presentation or portfolio, bring the necessary materials. Having a list of questions for the interviewer is also useful. Try to keep everything organized and easily accessible and don't be afraid to take notes! Q4: How do I handle nervousness before an interview? A4: Nervousness is natural! Consider what helps you overcome nerves. Common tips are to go prepared, take deep breaths and practice relaxation techniques. Visualize a successful interview and focus on your strengths. Arrive or sign-on early (10 minutes early for an in person interview and 5 minutes or less for a virtual interview) to avoid any last-minute stress and give yourself time to settle in.
