For Active Duty: We all know TAP is a fire hose of information, but did you know that's a very tiny portion of how your base Military & Family Readiness Office can help you? I sure wish I knew this while I was still active duty because I would have walked there with my folks BEFORE I introduced them to the education office. Why Though? Some of you have jobs that translate very well to civilian careers. Others....well...you need to do some digging/research. It's this very concept that we often completely overlook while still serving. This is no surprise! We are busy! Deployments, Crazy Shifts, Etc. However, if planned you can make serious stuff happen in between the chaos! Example: I refueled aircraft & did Logistics stuff for 17 years before becoming a Career Advisor for Ellsworth Air Force Base. Before I became a Career Advisor I had no idea how to translate my skills. I didn't even know where to start! All I knew is that I didn't want to refuel aircraft or be on a flightline for my post military job. Sound familiar?! Insert AFSC/MOS/Rating here and the same thing applies! This is why it's important to schedule an appointment with your base Military & Family Readiness Office. To explore what you WANT to do. To research the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities that are required to get your foot in the door with a company that has your dream job! You need to learn your "gaps"....then close them. Then....take your new information and schedule an appointment with your base Education Office and start knocking out those gaps using your Tuition Assistance and COOL funding. The earlier in your career you do this the better because you will learn ways to acquire experience along the way! Cheers!

🤘 Just over a month into being back to work after a 5-month job search stint. Wanted to share a couple of thoughts and pieces of advice for those who want it! - Establish your values and non-negotiables you want in your next job. Mine were 1) a culture of positivity w/ strong work-life balance, 2) technology that propelled the world forward, and 3) a strong leadership team as peers. ✔ - Do you're best to not settle. Everyone's life/financial situation is different, so this isn't blanket advice, but make sure you find the right fit for you... culturally, financially, and anything else you value. ✔ - Ask the same questions in each interview that allow you to gain insight to your values & non-negotiables. You can never get a full picture of what your workplace will look like, but there are questions you can use to gain insight (e.g. "what was the last event you all did to recognize employees?). ✔ - Don't let salary ranges deter you from going after jobs/companies that you want. A good employer should work with you on that if it's a good fit and they want you. If they don't, you then re-consider if it's as good of a fit as it looked on paper. ✔ I didn't get some offers I really wanted. I turned down good offers that weren't aligned with my values & path. Things worked out for me in the end and I'm extremely grateful for that. You can make this happen too - just ensure you stay focused on what's important... the opportunities will come. Sense of purpose Actively seeking that sense of purpose and keeping it front and center helps you to overcome the inevitable challenges as you strive for excellence. Portfolio of experiences Seizing opportunities to accumulate meaningful and relevant experiences to build your skills and network. 3. Participating in a career event at Camp Pendleton (CA) got me thinking of the career transitioning challenges that a servicemember is likely to face. Right there and then I decided to do something about it. Transitioning to a civilian lifestyle is not trivial and even as a career-civilian (me) I have to stay on top of the game to survive in the civilian jungle. Servicemembers bring valuable skills to any employer (communication, strategy, leadership, adaptability, discipline, problem solving, technical and more). The challenge that many servicemembers shared with me is finding the right fit for their skills and more. Making a career change is not easy for those who have always been civilians, it is even harder (possibly) for transitioning service members. They may be coming into a completely unknown territory by themselves where they need to take charge of their own success (survival) -- a job, income and more. I set up On Base Off Base as a community where transitioning servicemembers can get advice from their peers as well as civilians wanting to provide timely experience-based guidance. These civilians will open their network to give you the connections/resources you need to succeed. Stay tuned for more.
