"Brent is mildly iconoclastic." Not sure whether I'm more upset by being called an iconoclast or by being called mild.
I’ve been officially doing Legal Ops for about a year now (unofficially for longer, but that’s a different post). If there is one thing I could change about Legal Ops, it would be this: We need to stop pigeon-holing Legal Ops as “technology management” and “vendor relations.” Even if those things are a substantial part of your role (or the majority of your role), you shouldn’t define your job based on them. I say things for two reasons. First, vendor management is generally seen as a “less skilled function” within organizations. Is that fair? Absolutely not. But is it true? Yes, completely. Second, a true business operations function is much broader than just vendor management. It is process development and maintenance. It is personnel management. It is effective budgeting and financial planning. It is resource optimization. Legal Ops needs to talk more about those things and less about technology and vendors. #LegalOpsEvolution #BeyondTechManagement #BroadenYourScope #StrategicLegalOps #OperationalExcellence
Woot! Nailed it! Too many folks suggest that legal ops management is just an exercise in spending less money. While saving money and helping the dept scale in a cost-effective manner is important, there is sooo much more to the role!
Legal tech seems to dominate about 90% of the conversation if I had to put a line out there.
At the risk of being the master of the obvious — you are a LAWYER running a BUSINESS. There is no higher calling. You are not just talking about partnering with the business… you are the business. And a lawyer, Brent Dyer. You are a rare person who can do this effectively 👏👏👏
The reality of a legal ops job is far from the idealized picture painted of it. There's a significant misunderstanding of what we actually do in legal ops, with many equating it solely with legal tech. What's worse, many Legal Ops Job Descriptions advertise positions as opportunities to innovate and drive change through implementing legal technology, which often misrepresents the role's scope and responsibilities. Thank you for this reminder, Brent Dyer!
I agree! It's process engineering!
A+++ Brent Dyer.
