If no-one else can help you, and if you can find them.... Some times even the best laid plans go awry, an unforseen rogue element is discovered, and threatens to sabotage a key part of the project. The configuration of the services within a riser were found to be installed outside the scope of the original plan. The floor of the riser requires to provide separation between floors for a minimum of an hour, and the standard products and tested details are coming up blank. Most of the firestop product manufacturers have been contacted to advise if there is an ablative batt or firestopping mortar detail which could provide a solution. Some product manufacturers attended site, took plenty of detailed measurements, and advised that the situation on site falls outside the range of tested applications. If the situation could not be resolved, then the fire strategy could be revised, but the resultant required works would delay the project by months, and also have a hefty financial impact. There was a niggle at the back of my mind, a memory of a similar application from some years ago. A quick visit to site, checking out that situation on site meets the capability of the product for the application. Having confirmed that everything checks out, a proposal was outlined whilst on site with all relevant details provided to the product manufacturer by email. A couple of hours later, the green light was recieved from the manufacturer's technical team, with clear instructions of how to install. Four niche products are required to achieve the compliant solution, and it's all standard detail. Space, the final frontier... Well, not space as such. But spacing requirements are by far the biggest issue which crops up multiple times every single day on new build and refurbishment sites alike. Spacings alone are the single most cause of an installation been rejected as compliant, against the product manufacturers tested details. The installation of passive fire products require that the spacings between services are a minimum of 100mm, as per BS EN1366 testing. There are some product test data which can reduce the required spacing, eg. putty pad, ablative batt patress seals, etc. but these vary by manufacturer. The cost of a simple direct to wall mastic seal is a few quid. Question for my connections in the roofing sector… Does anyone know of a product that you can use to detail a cable penetration without the need to get lead welded in situ or having one end of the cable not connected as to feed through a refurb product, for use on field area and also large upstands. I know there are many products on the market for cable weathering applications, but these all require one end of the cable to be free of connection to be fed through the product.
