Our Summer Release wasn’t the only thing Brex shipped last week... 👀 I'm excited to share our latest brand campaign! 🔥 We built it using the same principle as the release: helping customers make every dollar count. No great company was ever built on savings alone. Our goal at Brex is to help customers extend the power of every dollar to actually move the needle in their business, in 3 ways: ⚙️ Control: We help customers control spend before it happens, and 99% of their spend on Brex ($50b!) is on budget, in policy automatically. 🤖 Automate: Customers automated 11 million hours (!) of busy work with Brex, which now go towards driving growth and building amazing things. 💰 Earn: Customers have earned $680M+ in rewards and $300M+ in yield, and counting. (This is not an estimate, but actual income created by the product.)

I was reminiscing on the myriad quarter ends I have witnessed in the tech industry, and some experiences brought a smile to my face. 1. The sudden closure of bluebird deals by the sales team or partner that wasn't forecasted to close and not even in the pipeline. 2. The side meetings to build the reason/ excuse for a deal slipping by the deal owner and their team before they appear for the review. So that they all display orchestrated remorse and nod their heads in unison during the review. 3. The fight because the Partner Lead calls out that the deal isn't coming much to the chagrin of the deal owner who wants to display he/ she has total control or doesn't want to share the news as yet. 4. The number of people across Sales, Marketing, Partner, Finance and operations teams appearing extremely busy to show they play a part during the quarter end even if some of them don't! More so at the regional Asia office level.  I remember one VP pacing up and down the corridors during the quarter end and perhaps he thought that would help in some way! More deals getting done.

Last week we signed our first $1M contract! 🍾 A huge milestone for the company, which reminded me of our humble beginnings... About 9 years ago, I was working on the very first proposal for what we now call Thematic. At that time, I was a consultant who stumbled upon a common pain point. To address this, I designed a quick prototype: a python script + a powerpoint deck... Surprisingly, the solution was good enough. One of the companies I worked with asked for a proposal. I had never been a founder before and didn't know what to do. While I understood how to bill hours, this was different—a new solution in the market. A sales coach helped me brainstorm how to approach it. He estimated the value to the company at around $100K, which was much higher than I felt my prototype was worth. He recommended that I quote the highest amount I felt comfortable presenting. So I did, and they accepted it! Since then, we created a product and a team around it. Our pricing has gradually increased. That company, which became our first customer, is still with us 9 years later! Meanwhile, a much larger company tested Thematic for over a year and decided to sign a $1M deal with us! There are many founders who get to this milestone much faster. But today, I'm taking a moment to appreciate all the hard work our team put in to make this happen. 🥂

The beginning of partnerships in business can be very exciting and filled with great expectations of success for the future. But as in marriages, things change, stuff happens and partners are not always as compatible as they appear. Let's talk about Business Development (BD). I know you might be thinking, "Oh no, not again!" But hear me out – BD isn't just a quick fix. Remember 2019? We only did BD when we absolutely had to. Then COVID hit, and suddenly reaching out became crucial. The market bounced back, we got complacent, and now we're facing a new era of uncertainty. 🙋♀️Here's the thing: BD needs to be part of your system. It's not something you can switch on overnight. Depending on your sector, converting someone can take 60, 90, or even 180 days. Don't wait for the next crisis. Now is the perfect time to build your BD system, especially at this point in the year. Remember, consistency is key. Start today, and you'll thank yourself for it later.
