I know I have a lot of fans out there watching quietly. So, this post is for you as well as for the job seekers. If you could take a second to like this post, it would mean a lot to me! I started this business about a year and a half ago, but if we are being honest, those first six months were just trying to understand the basics of running a business. Contrary to popular LinkedIn belief, you are, in fact, not an expert at everything the minute you start doing it. I’m totally okay with admitting that. I had pretty much no business development experience and a tight runway of cash. I was lucky that I got my first placement only a month and a half in, but it's not lucky that I'm still in business. I knew I was going to do whatever it took, even if that meant working nights at an Amazon factory or part-time at Starbucks. I never actually got there, but I’m not ashamed to say I investigated both options. I just knew that I was a good recruiter, and I'd work hard to figure out what I didn't know. What I didn’t know is that I’d be here a year and a half into my journey and actively recruiting for eight different roles with another handful on the way. I didn’t know how well clients would respond to the idea of getting away from large agencies. In fact, they like the idea of working with an independent recruiter, disrupting the status quo. I can’t thank all my clients and candidates enough who have supported my dream over the past year and a half! I’ve reviewed a few resumes and I have some potential candidates, but I wanted to get a clearer picture of what you’re looking for in the ideal candidate. Can you tell me more about the key skills and experiences that are critical for this role? Hiring Manager: I already sent you the job description, didn’t I? Recruiter: Yes, but I was hoping to get some more specifics from you. For example, you mentioned experience with cloud services. Are you looking for expertise in AWS, Azure, or GCP? Hiring Manager: Honestly, any cloud service works. We just need someone who knows the cloud stuff. Recruiter: Alright. Are there any particular projects or types of work they should have experience with? Hiring Manager: They just need to be good at coding. I don’t care what projects they’ve worked on as long as they can code. Recruiter: How about soft skills? Are there particular attributes you’re looking for in terms of team fit and work style? Hiring Manager: I don’t have time to worry about soft skills. If they can code and get the work done, that’s all that matters. Recruiter: Understood. One last thing—what’s the timeline for this hire? When do you need the new developer to start? Hiring Manager: Yesterday. We’re already behind schedule and we can’t afford any more delays. Recruiter: That’s quite urgent. I’ll do my best to expedite the process. Hiring Manager: Yeah, well, we’ll see. Just make sure you get someone who can actually do the job this time. We can’t afford another misfit. Recruiter: I understand. I’ll keep you updated on our progress. Hiring Manager: Fine. Just get it done. Recruiter: Will do. Rule #2 of picking a "good" psychic: If you are considering hiring a Medium that has 20 years of experience... don't. Just... don't. This person is clearly not competent at their job. "Medium" is an entry level title. You wouldn't hire a Jr. Software Developer with 20 years of experience. That would be silly. Someone that started as a Medium 20 years ago should at least be a Large, possibly an Extra-Large at that point in their career.
