AJ Specification delves into the world of BEAM in its latest issue.⭐ Designed by Bennetts Associates, our work to turn the former Hertford Theatre into a multi-arts major cultural hub has been transformative for the region. Read the issue to discover the design journey we took with client East Herts District Council and the approach from our practice to ensure that BEAM would: - Reflect the scale and grain of the historic town - Connect with communities - Reduce embodied carbon by keeping as much of the previous building as possible in addition to using a combination of re-use and regenerative materials like mass timber https://lnkd.in/eNJNdTAs #BEAM #Architecture #TransformativeDesign

Answer to your question: One of the advantages of postmodern architecture is paying attention to the records and experiences of architects from different climates. The use of local heat and sound insulation materials is evident in past architectures of all climates. Moving away from the records and styles of the mentioned architectures will have no result other than wasted energy and visual and architectural disturbance.

Described by one attendee as “taking a master-level class in mass timber,” WoodWorks project tours are often a tipping point that encourages developers and architecture, engineering, and construction professionals to pursue their own wood-based projects. Reusing heritage properties has become more complex due to concerns about property protection and public safety, especially with respect to the increasingly stringent fire safety requirements in the National Construction Code (NCC). It can be challenging to retrofit fire safety measures that do not significantly alter the structure of heritage buildings. In a new White Paper from Promat Australia titled 'Fire Protection In Heritage Buildings: Navigating The Challenges of Adaptive Reuse' they examine the key challenges of making older buildings compliant to current fire safety regulations. Materials library: MarksBarfield Architects! Julia Barfield, Ian Crockford and Thomas Henderson Schwartz discuss how the #ClimateEmergency is reshaping the practice’s approach to design, construction and materiality. "We’ve been ‘on a journey’, as they say, and this has included introducing a strategy for change (based on the original Architects Declare strategy for change), where the practice has stated its environmental aims and then outlined the various stages/operations needed to achieve them," says Julia Barfield. "Our principal objective is to become a regenerative practice aligned to the planetary emergency, and where everything it does is set within planetary limits. This includes becoming climate literate and increasing our Passivhaus design capability." Read the full feature interview in the link below! ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eqMemee7

Plans for the impending restoration of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) 66 Portland Place headquarters in London have become clearer with the release of an amended proposal outlining the scope of work for the new House of Architecture project. Benedetti Architects will head the project, which was awarded in 2022 following a brief competition. The anticipated £58.8 million project will provide complete accessibility throughout all 28 levels of the 90-year-old Art Deco skyscraper while replacing existing fossil fuel-dependent systems to reach a net zero goal. Since 1970, the original George Grey Wornum design has been protected under a historic Grade II classification. RIBA says: "[The] House of Architecture brings together three critical areas of our work that need investment, and will deliver on improvements that are fundamental to RIBA’s ongoing mission." https://lnkd.in/dN4hv8Ke
