According to statistics from the National House-Building Council (NHBC) in 2019, timber frame was used in 22% of new build homes in Wales, 30% in Northern Ireland and in an incredible 92% of new builds in Scotland. But in England, that number was only 9%. UK Government's new roadmap on increasing the use of timber in construction shows more needs to be done to encourage this method in England. We hope that the new outline, which includes using locally-sourced timber, will help. Mass timber "accelerators" have popped up in several U.S. cities to encourage builders to use engineered wood products. Now, the Softwood Lumber Board, which has invested in several such initiatives, is looking to fund accelerators in more U.S. cities. Proponents of mass timber say it's a way to reduce the embodied carbon of buildings, although some researchers have cautioned that wood can be associated with high greenhouse gas emissions and ecological impacts depending on where it comes from. #masstimber #construction
