Germany plans to phase out Huawei and ZTE components from its 5G network over the next five years to safeguard against potential security risks. Mobile operators like Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, and Telefonica will remove these components from their core networks by 2026 and from access and transport networks by 2029. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the importance of secure communications, while Huawei denied posing cybersecurity risks. A new report from Recorded Future highlights the relentless cyber targeting of Taiwan by the China state-sponsored group RedJuliett, also known as FlaxTyphoon, EtherealPanda, and Storm-0919. Over the past six months, RedJuliett has targeted more than 70 Taiwanese organizations, focusing on academia, government, technology, economic policy think tanks, computing industry associations, and multiple de facto embassies. The group continues to exploit network perimeters, specifically edge devices and web/SQL services, for initial access. Following successful breaches, RedJuliett heavily utilizes SoftEther VPN and open-source web shells to maintain persistence and deepen their infiltration. This sustained campaign underscores the urgent need for robust network security measures, enhanced monitoring for unusual VPN and web shell activities, and comprehensive incident response plans to defend against such sophisticated state-sponsored threats. https://lnkd.in/dFjYKtad
