How mistakes can be magical. We set up a village beer club a couple of years ago. Once a quarter folk descend on the village hall. Although this time, I messed up. I completely forgot to apply for the licence. Realising with less than 48 hours to go. No licence, no selling. Frustrated and hopeful, I didn't want to let the community down, or our kind suppliers. Beer Club takes a bit of organising. Ian and his brewery had the beer ready. Nick on hand with the spirits. Vanessa provides another local gin. Paula and Gary take care of the wines and soft drinks. Chris brings his award winning pies. Volunteers ready. Local wins. Making mistakes helps us think differently. I explored a number of ideas. If we could raise sponsorship to cover costs before the event, we could go ahead. No selling required. No licence needed. Within two hours of asking, our costs (and some*) were covered. A few local companies and some loyal regulars came good. I was grateful for their kindness. My mistake pivoting to opportunity. For one night only, we had a free bar. It was a joy seeing folks faces on realising all drinks were free. Mistakes happen. They can become opportunities. Don't be shy in admitting a mistake. There is always a way. Learning is everywhere. Never underestimate asking for help. More folk want you to succeed, than fail. The power of community. The joy of a mistake. A community that cares - the secret ingredient to success? When we first dabbled in the art of chilli pepper cultivation in our small UK garden, my husband decided he would share his passion through YouTube. His videos covered everything from growing to fermenting chilli peppers. But it was his hot sauce tutorial that sparked an unexpected flame. After posting his first video, the response was immediate – our small community of followers wanted to know where they could get their hands on our homemade hot sauce. Motivated by this enthusiasm, we launched our cottage business, beginning with small batches that surprisingly sold out within hours. As our audience grew, so did our production. Today, we prepare hundreds of bottles per batch, supported by a community nearly 200,000 strong. What truly resonates with our customers is the authenticity and personal touch we bring to each bottle. From crafting the recipe and testing it on our bravest friends (sometimes without them knowing! 🤣), to mixing, bottling, capping, and designing everything ourselves – we are deeply involved in every step. This weekend marked a new chapter as we launched 2 x new products on Friday via YouTube. The preparation was intense: I designed new labels just last Thursday, and we've been busy printing, labelling, and packing. With such a robust community, these spicy salts will likely fly off the shelves as quickly as our sauces. Beyond just business, our community thrives on mutual support – from growing advice and seed swaps to troubleshooting and equipment tips. It's not uncommon to find members discussing life's ups and downs in our Discord channels. Why does this matter? Because at the heart of our success is not just chilli or sauce; it's the relationships and connections fostered along the way. Community isn’t just a part of our business; it’s why we do what we do. We both love spending time chatting with the community, we host a livestream once a month and we've also met some of them at chilli festivals in the UK. With May just around the corner I need to get a couple of things done today so that I feel all prepared for the coming Month. For my business: finding some local networking groups to attend in person. Gosh this terrifies me, and I’m still not sure I’m even going to go to them yet, but if I have them in my calendar, I can at least attempt to get there! For my Family: Meal planning the dinners for the next 2 months. What I tend to do is plan 4 weeks worth of dinners that we rotate through for 2 months, it means I don’t have to plan the meals every week, because that was getting tedious, but it also means that I only have to do the food shopping lists once, I just quickly check if we are out of anything, or make a note of things we have run out of as I run out of them, and it makes meal planning and food shopping so much easier! Let’s say you agreed with the catering company to have enough food for 200 people at your event. Yet, only 100 people registered, and you’re unlikely to get additional attendees before the event starts.   When caught up in planning fever, you might easily forget to update the catering company with the new headcount. Subsequently, you’ll end up paying for catering for 200 people and waste money and food.   One thing to remember when planning an event is to have your mind in the right place and be very careful about how things influence each other. After all, event planning involves a chain of actions bound together. One simple change can greatly affect all the other logistics. So, be careful about the law of cause and effect. Business owners, families, staff, parents, kids don't care about your meetings with politicians, your reports and gala events, your back patting and dick measuring, they need help, ideas, solutions and action; and they need it now! I don't have the answers, and don't claim to know it all but it's clear government won't help, industry bodies can't help and the consumer is struggling to make ends meet anyway so asking them to spend more, support local and pay $10 for coffee is pointless...they simply don't have it!
