As someone whose work is about leadership, I'm keenly appreciating the provocation of "enough leadership: back to management" in this Minute with Mintzberg. Thank you Henry Mintzberg! This piece is spot-on in identifying that too often we hold up leadership as something preferable to management. Many years ago I was advised to chose between being a leader (I'm being purposeful in the use of "leader," not "leadership" here) and being a manager and was told that it was not possible to do both. This binary thinking irked me and put me on a path of exploring leadership as a way of managing. Where leadership is about the needs, rights, and aspirations of the collective and bringing our individual best selves and gifts to the table. For me this is where management goes from a tired playbook of same-old-same-old to an open canvas of creative ideas and solutions, genuine engagement and relationship building, and a healthy, trust-based, and even joyful work culture. When in a position of leadership however slight - know the difference.

Leadership is distributed through an organization, and leadership is an action of : shared map mapping (making sense of the environment/challenge/decision); constructing the creative and restrictive boundaries; identifying what behaviors and activities are not allowed; agreeing on how to treat and respond to those who violate the behaviors. Confusion is a good place to be, and when confusion happens, leadership emerges.
