“We just need them to meet 1 more person” That seems like a reasonable request, Right? But when the candidate has already been put through 5 rounds of interviews Has already met with 7 different stakeholders across a 5 week period Has been told already that the previous two conversations they’ve had would also be the “last one” Then I’m sorry, but this is now NOT a reasonable request. You’re wasting everyone’s time! Because this said candidate has now dropped out of your interview process and has accepted another offer. And I don’t blame them. You're back to square one with no other options available. Over the past 12 months organisations in the tech industry have been spoilt with available talent. With hundreds of thousands of layoffs across the industry and clearly far more active talent than vacancies available, it’s enabled businesses to be really picky on who they hire. But whilst that’s happened, it’s developed bad habits that will come back to haunt them in the near future. The market is shifting and we’re seeing less A-Players available. The best ones are getting snapped up quickly! So, if you’re hiring and you think that an A-Player will wait around whilst you add numerous stages to your interview process because you’re unable to make a decision, you’re in for an almighty shock! Over the past 13 years I’ve seen some of the best companies in the world nail their hiring & onboarding processes But I’ve also seen hundreds make a complete mess at their attempts to hire excellent Software Engineering talent. Hiring in the technology sector is still highly competitive due to all of the layoffs from last year. So you get selected for an interview, how are you going to stand out from the stiff competition? Here are some recommendations: 👉 Go above and beyond when it comes to company research (check all socials, linkedin posts, look-over employee profiles, and even read product reviews). 👉 Test the product! Then test the competitor products. 👉 Prepare some analysis on what you feel the company is doing really well and then have one or two suggestions on how they could be more competitive (deliver this lightly so feelings don't get hurt). 👉 Create a portfolio of work samples that can be shared with interviewers. Nothing works better than showcasing past successes and giving tangible examples of your work. 👉 Verbally express your enthusiasm for the company, people and product 👉 Write thank you letters to the interviewers after each interview. Incorporate real-world projects in interviews, offer flexible working conditions, and foster a culture that values individual contributions as much as technical skills.
